I do not have access to it any longer but...

The 80 foot-tall grain silo across the gravel road from my former country home was very good indeed. I dug a trench across that gravel road and buried the lines...which were daisy-chained Whirlwind mic cables (circa 1982).

It was aprox 20 feet in diameter, with a concrete floor and tin roof.

It was fired-up via a mono send from a TAC Scorpion desk..to a DC-300...to a JBL 3-way stage wedge monitor.

The "stereo" returns were via dual older 421's.

I'd climb up rusty cemented-in iron rungs in order to adjust the mic placements...often at 2 AM, or so. Plastic flashlight held in clenched teeth, no-one around for a mile or so. Oh, to be 24 again. Damn thing is at 52 I'd darn well still do it to get that sound...but by now I'd have ruined it by more modern "improvements".

One part of the sound was the fact that the 421's sounded a bit different. There was a "magic" panning just inside of wide that just glued together famously.

Pre-delay courtesy of a Roland Space Echo.

The Silo Reverb sounded fabulous....easily as good as the famous Gold Star etc...The "Good Vibrations" 'verb REALLY BETTER. Fat warm and round, but it sat with ease anytime with little trouble (even the Scorp EQ was more than needed). Couldnt use it for general purposes when it rained (raindrops hitting the tin roof) and the ocassional passing vehicle crunching on the gravel road made it's subtle way into the mix.

Ive been chasing that sound ever since to no avail.

I remain, therefor, a huge proponent of true echo chambers.

There is one in every home! If only the dryer basket or bathroom.

For drums try the Uad Plate 140 on the middle plate, and close to the shortest decay setting. It rocks!!!!

Thanks for the tip. i will try it as soon as I can figure out how to make my uad card not confliting with my new hd2 cards! I even have the plate authorized!

Im not a big fan of real spaces too. I dont care if its the actual notre dame response I have. I just need it to sound right.

TC 6000 for me.

BTW, used a EMT 140 for years. Great device. But the EMT 240 was almost always better..

Back in the early 80's I ran a studio with Mark Johnson in his house in Granada Hills, CA. His dad "installed" a full on nuclear bomb shelter under the front yard back in 1962. We stripped it out of air filters and wall coverings to create a chamber. It worked really well. We installed a pair of JBL 4413's inside with a stereo mic pair at the other end. I built a variable expander/compressor circuit we used to tune the decay time electronically.

I prefer either the hot rodded Echoplate II or the M7 these days. I no longer need to build custom spring reverbs and wire bomb shelters, life is good.

I love my EMT 140... usually I'll wack a TC delay or perhaps a space echo in front as a pre-delay, which I find to be very important.

I sometimes use my lowly pcm 70 for a tiny bit of wet if it's more of a delay-dependant vocal (think Lennon, Elvis).
goota plug the echoboy for the vocal delay!

But I LOVE our tall concrete stairwell for group vocals and verb.

A high fig 8 ribbon pointed from slightly above singers at a downward angle to the singers so it gets them in front, and the height of stairwel in back and it's sides null the close reflections... use release time on heavy compressor to control volume of reverb sustain. long for less, short for lots. I like the EAR660 for this and often track it as i'll want it in the mix compression-wise. then I do three tracks of three group parts, pan it L-C-R
and whoa! instant big-ass choir in the church from hell!

aint nothin like the real thang, baby!

It all depends on the song and the mood I am trying to create... But, if I could only have one great reverb, it would be the Bricasti M7.

Pretty cool to see a decent amount of people using the UAD Plate for drums, that's my go to for my drum sound...I add a plate to the snare on top of it. I also use it for heavy guitars and screams and works great with the roland dimension D on a send blended to taste. I tend use dreamverb for clean guitar sounds and for lead vocals I like realverb with a decently short delay again with the dimension D blended to taste. kinda just always works for me, at least lately with the projects and genre I've been working with. Of course, there are a decent amount of other UAD and duende plugins on there as well....

Mostly hardware in the form of TC Electronic Reverb4000... but also some plugs such as those with the UAD and Powercore cards, Altiverb, and IR1.

Waves IR1 and Samplitude's reverb. The IR1 gives me the great sounding convolution reverbs that were sampled right, (no simple balloon test were done) and it offers more flexibility on your settings than most cov plug ins.

Samplitude has a great reverb that has a lush quality to it, and I have been able to get great sounds from it.
