If you can't be bothered with soldering you should probably go for TT Patchbays with D-SUBS (DB-25). Buy breakout cables for your equipment.

hi
I bought a 24ch Wunderbar one year ago and i thought i'd leave my impressions here.
On the upside :
- it sounds really good, preamps, summing, EQs.
- it's VERY good looking
- it's simple and effective

On the downside :
- there's a few design flaws (on mine, HP and EQ buttons are clicky/noisy for instance)
- although Mike Castoro seems to be a nice guy, the customer support is really weak. It takes ages to get any problem fixed, and i've had a few, which is a shame considering the price of the console. They even sent me back a whole new master panel without noticing that there was missing pots..

24 channel Wunderbar Console

Interesting report. I was very close going for the Wunder two yrs ago and I still think it has to be one of the coolest new consoles around.
Just a little comment on the clicky switches. My reissue Neve 1081/1084 modules act that way too. So is a vintage Neve console in a studio I use to work in, so I'd guess this is the way this design behaves. I'm not a tech but to me it seems logical since you're engaging an additional path in the chain.
BTW big congrats on the purchase!! I guess I'm not the only one lusting for a pic or two...

Delighted to say my Wunderbar console has at last been patchbayed (is that the word? :-)) to Pro Tools HD1 with 2 Digi 192 i/o. Still to do some test runs & decide on headphone mix setup but looking forward to doing some tracking & mixing

Firstly I decided to go without a patchbay so bought Mogami DB25 cables & wired to Pro Tools. Did a few tests to check all channels were working.

Then got caught up in what I guess you could call non-recording music projects. Eventually got around to hiring patchbay installer & adding a quality compressor & reverb to the setup.

Yes James, since 09. crazy I know. Now ready to embark on some cool projects hopefully.

Do the busses have outputs too?

That way you could add a surround system and uncheck from the master and use the puter to do a surroundoutput into channels and then mix that 5.1. project in the DAW?

There are 6 Buss Outs on the Master Section (pics near beginning of this thread)

Glad you mentioned the surround possibilities. Perhaps another feature to attract possible clients

You could add the Logitech Z5500 surround set then Or the newer Z906. THX certified and doesn't cost more than a dinner out.

I have the Proactive 5.1 from Alesis. Wich is a Logitech OEM... (Logitech Z-680)

Sort of surround sound from NS10 quality. But..... when the mix shines the system will tell you so.

Wunderbar Patchbay

So here is the 24 Channel Wunderbar Console in my 'Realtrapped' one room studio. Recently patched to Pro Tools HD1 (24 i/o). Argosy furniture also hosting Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor and Bricasti M7.

I don't know about you guys, but I keep looking at the page on VK's website that shows an unloaded 24ch Wunderbar.

As if that's not enough, on top of that I keep dreaming about filling it with 12 channels of Heritage 6673's and 8173's. Is this possible? Are these modules interchangable in this fashion? If no modification woudl be necessary, you'd have all 4 band EQ's to work with, slightly varying EQ points for additional options and they'd all be class A!!

I'm drooling just thinking about it!!

Yes, there should be no problem in using Heritage modules in the Wunderbar.
I have a vintage Neve console loaded with a variety of Neve, Wunder and Heritage modules - works like a charm..

Stop teasing, I'm very vulnerable at the moment...lol...

No seriously, I got thinking about this. Heritage made every 4-band unit they make class A which is the main drawback of the original 1081 from the 1073. Having the option of 2 different modules with different midband EQ points can't suck one bit...

I'd have a field day if I could afford that setup...

Sounds like it would be an awesome set up.. Can be built up over time..

I use a studio with a Neve Class AB board and Class A and B
outboard.

Tracking, I usually prefer the more forward Neve 1095 Class A/B modules, especially on drums.. They are pretty mindblowing and mix easier.

Hmm, 1095? Didn't know those were ever made. Only one I know of that isn't too common is the 1079. So the 1095 is more mid-forward? Where's the frequency push lie, below 1k, in the hi-mids? API and Daking each have a forward sound, but their accent lies in 2 completely different spots of their frequency range. Can you explain more?

The 1095 has the same EQ points as the 1081 with two extra Q/bell buttons (one for high end), and a different output transformer - Also uses the B382 motherboard from the EMI Neve consoles. I've read there were 6 consoles with this module, Utopia studios had them... I think VK had some for sale.. The pres are a favourite.

Here's a couple of studios with full consoles of 1095's..

I've been interested in this console for a very long time. One thing that keeps me from being completely sold on it is the limited amount of send/returns. I wish that the 1/2-L/R and 3/4-L/R buttons instead used the 2trk returns. If there was a way to monitor all channels as well as the 2trk returns simultaneously, that would allow the 1234 busses to be used as additional send/returns in a full mix.
