It really does exhibit an enormous amount of control, yet smooth character not associated with FET designs. Brad has hit the nail on the head with this one, with a sledge hammer...!

Then I think you'll like this.

It grabbed me the first time I heard it and now I'm saving for a second unit.

Maybe this question cannot be answered -but I will try it anyway -

What compressor is this closest to soundwise??? Anything out there?

Hey AB3- it really has its own sound and vibe and sounds nothing like any comps I have used. However, it does seem to have some of the very best characteristics of some of my comps as follows-all rolled into one monster:

1. Has that thickening of a fet-but is soo velvet in its attack even though its attack can be very aggressive and fast.

2. Has a musical smoothing class to it like a buzz essence optical.

3. Has that transformery buzz which enriches in a hi fi edge like a neve 5043- put 2 over the mix and see the depth and richness-first time over the mix I was speechless.

4. Has controls which are very communicative-ie the release/attack/input- you turn and the sound is easy to sculpt-bit like my sebatron nitrous has communicative controls.

So it seems to have taken some of the very best characteristics of my compressors and rolled it into a tiny 1 slot 500 series that has all these various characteristics-with other freaky aspects like the distortion/sidechain controls and ability to drive input/output for other sounds.

I have 3 of them and dream of a rack of 8 for running mix through console when mixing. Thing is- if you track with them I find the tracks do not need much further compression in mix- but I would still like to run tracks even with no gain reduction for the transformer vibe/buzz/depth and distortion mode on select instruments etc.

Long winded-

Yup, and super controlled without the "hard" sound of an FET compressor.

Thanks for such a fantastic response. (thanks to Warren to for piping in, Warren always steers people towards good gear.)
Cheers,
AB
P.S. They are now on my must have list for this year. And I have to save up for the "Nail" as well.
I just do not know why this doesn't have a tool name - like the "vicegrip?"

Here's the down and dirty...
AKG C12VR > Pacifica > EM-PEQ > BAC 500 to Pro Tools 192.
Except for the actual tracking, there are no additional plugins on the guitars for EQ or compression.
Michael Ripoll is playing all the guitars.

Also Reggie Hamilton is on bass.
Reggie is playing his custom Fender Bass using the REDDI as the DI.
Thanks Tony, that was a great example to share.

I have a question for other users on the BAC-500.

I have tried it on Drum Room Mic, Bass, Kick, Snare, and the BAC seems fast but the question is Electric Guitar? (Lead/Solo).....still lovin it!

I'm going to give it a try but I was wondering if anyone else worked with it for that appilcation and if you did what were your results........(Hard Rock)

I just did vocals..................GREAT!!!!

I record heavily distorted electric guitars thru it all the time! It rocks for that app.

for rock vocals....
SM7 into a MA5 or 1073 (lots of gain... 65db), followed by...

BA500 @ 4:1 with the hi-pass engaged, fast attack/release and the "distortion" button in...
hit it hard = IN YOUR FACE

Man, you guys are killing me. I've been making a list and checking it twice, thinking about what I'd like to get to build my own little remote rig but haven't really thought about entering the 500 series world much. But seeing that I know I'll want at least one good compressor to start, I have to seriously think more about this format !

I usually don't get caught up in the inertia of product hype but the fact that I'm reading such favorable comments from people who's opinions I really trust around here, this would have to be my first stop for a compressor to try.

I think a lunchbox would be hard to beat as a mobile rig.
