Any other GS freaks recently buy a FLEA 47?

I recently added a FLEA 47 to my mic cabinet. It joins a FLEA 49 and a bunch of other true vintage tube mics.

This FLEA 47 sounds very good indeed right up beside a real Neumann U47.

I am interested to hook up with other FLEA freaks here on GS.

Who else made the strong move to FLEA?

I've been trying to get a 47 and a 49 to review from Jonathan Little but no luck so far. Everybody wants to hear these things but I don't know how many are floating around in the States...

Perhaps 2009 will be the year that the US dealer gets some mics in stock. Grind him or seek Euro alternatives.

Funky Junk in the UK has the 47. (thats where I bought mine with UF14 tube). Have not got to use it yet due to studio still being built.

Fantastic sounding mic. In contrast to many other 47-clones I have heard it has the "old" sound (imho) that is characterized by the low mids and mids that sound soft/round/pillowy. All other clones I have heard so far were lacking this quality...so basically I love the FLEA47 - although I have to admit I only have had a few chances to play with it so far, only recorded singing and spoken voice with it in cardioid. Also tried vox in omni but did not like it much.
A funny thing is that it sounds closer to my U87ai than I imagined it would. Put the two up side by side, and although the FLEA has this "tube" thing in the low mids and mids going on, they are pretty close in character (and I have to admit I never was a big fan of the U87 on vocals except maybe spoken voice). If anyone is interested I can maybe dig out the files and post them, FLEA/U87 side by side on a vocal take....

Rock on!
Pat

Hi.
I haven't posted very often here, but I read GS regularly and since there aren't many thread about these great mics, I wanted to shine in. I have a FLEA 47 and I find it a wonderful mic. Fabulous for my V.O. work. But not close at all to a U87. I also have a U87 (old version from 1974) and it is far less lush and rich than the FLEA 47.
We compared it to U47s and the Flea was extremely close. But I have not heard the Wagner, the Telefunken U.S.A. and the Wunder.

aileka, I was surprised too....wait until I have time to dig out the track and post it. In this one comparison I did, it really was close in charater to the U87ai...I was really surprised. Of course, for different applications, voices, distances, patterns etc the differences will most likely vary more. But that one closeup vocal was really similar ;-) I will post the files blind!
Best,
Pat

ps - maybe it was just me on a bad day, curious how it sounds to me when I listen back with a little time between....happens to the best of us ;-)

So, this is a thank you to Plush for recommending the Flea49 so adamantly.

We did our first session today in our new facility, and the Flea49 went straight to work on trumpet.

There is only one word to use: effortless.

That's what the 49's reproduction sounds like. At no point did the mic sound like it was getting in the way.

I am pleased. Deeply so.

So, thanks again Plush.

And thanks to the guys at Flea for doing what they do.

A Flea47 is now in my future.

I purchased my FLEA 47 from Masi at Studio 57 in Finland.
Masi did a fantastic job for me and is highly recommended.
Funky Junk in London also sells these mics.

You can listen to FLEA 49 on piano at home in a shootout with 11 pairs of other microphones here. Not a great romm but this test can give you an idea of how good FLEA 49 sounds with respect to some well known microphones (Audio Technica 4047, Rode K2, AKG 414, Schoeps, ...)

Various tubes are available from FLEA. I think the tube in the one I have is an EF14.
Sounds very good indeed right next to a fantastic Neumann U47.

You've got my attention!

I just got through listening to the wave sample of the mic on my Sennheiser headphones. It does sound very nice indeed.

Hi Tony,

I contacted Jonathan Little over a year ago on these mics. I got the okay to review them for Tape-Op and was trying to get an M49 and a U47 to compare to several original Neumann M49's and U47's.

I'm still interested in doing this if Flea is interested.

PS tried to send this as a private message but you don't allow them.

Talk soon.

best regards,
Larry

Bump on that one. Me too. Any idea of the price for the model A. I'm hoping it sounds close to an M49.

In France, from 2290 € without mount, wood box and case to 3200 € with these items.

what?? nearly half the price if you don't take the case? (and mount, which is reasonably important I suppose)

edit: oh I think perhaps by case you mean the actual body of the mic? Does the cheaper version use a different body?

Oh sorry for my mistake: 3200 €, not 4200 €.

No what I called the case is the aluminium briefcase containing the microphone in its wood box, the mount, the PSU and the cable. The price for it is 410 €. There is an intermediate set with all the items except for the briefcase, the price of which is 2790 €.

Their website is one of the most, if not **the** most frustrating manufacturer's website I've ever come across. I had to close it after a minute. And the section where you buy stuff doesn't work.

Go there: comparison FLEA 47, FLEA 12, U47 (VF14) and AKG the tube on a female vocalist.
