This could be ultimate tool for tracking....imagine 8 of them heh......I read it has a gorgeous preamp...and obviously a compressor similar to the distressor...

I am really looking forward to trying one, looks like a nice piece of gear.

Are they available yet? In the UK?

Mike-e is very [VERY] cool... takes a bit to figure it out and get used to it... but once you do it becomes a rather valuable weapon in the arsenal [one I have no desire to be without from here on out].

Peace.

no way!! i didn't even know this thing existed two days ago, but now i want one. EL really makes such great products; truly one of the most reliably awesome companies. they're ALWAYS bringing something new to the table. i mean, they never just settle for a typical comp or pre or eq - they have to add their trademark quirkiness and inventiveness to it, which always makes me curious and willing to throw down for gear i really don't need. and as usual, i can't wait to see what kind of crazy, brilliant, new ideas they came up with.

I also discovered that the C&T El-Diablo and the Mike-E pairing can make some magic happen when I used that combo for inside the kick drum. A Little Comp/SAT, not too much input gain and DAM, I was very happy with the "head or gut" kick sound I was getting.

Roc...you were full of praise for the el9...would you choose this over a for eg. a Neve 8801? I know they are not the same but if you had to choose...

how does the comp section compare to the distressor and fatso? Dave says is sort of a mix between the two. Is it useful at mix time as a regular compressor like the EL8 or is it more a tracking-only thing? Care to comment a bit more? thx

I would absolutely choose the Mike-E becasue it destroys the 8801.

Its like a hybrid of both, with a little more focus on tape sat, with a wet/dry control that neither of them have. You can do similar tricks with this compressor, but it really shines after the preamp in my experience. The amount of HF softening you can do is glorious for vocals.

If you are asking my opinion, which it looks as though you are, and if the Mike-E and 8801 were in both MY rack, than YES, the Mike-E Would DESTROY the 8801. I invite you to try these units to make this determination for yourself with your own music and equipment selection. The 8801 is $2950, the Mike-E is $1600, I would think, and highly recommend taking this $1350 savings and buying a microphone for your studio would make you a happier person.

I think Dave's description is spot on. The compressor sounds really good - it can get squishy but it doesn't get really aggressive like the Distressor.

For me, the real highlight of the thing is the interaction between the pre and the drive control. And in Line mode, the drive circuit is still active. So if you need to breath a little life into a track, this may be a good way to do it. And there is something about this thing that sounds fantastic on bass !!!!!

Absolutely worth checking out !!

best,
John

One of the best purchases done...
It´s been really good on vocs, acoustic gt, bass.. i can´t see why it couldn´t be great on everything else too. Like drs.
We´ve used it on all recordings after we got it.
You should try it. Then you know.

Yes! Great vocals with this and SM7. The DI is awesome for bass, sounds sweet when pushed with the comp/sat. Then guitars, drums, percs.. I like it on everything heh
