Best Lead Vocal Mix Compressor/s?

I am thinking 1176/LA2A/Summit TLA100?

Particularly for clear/smooth sounding pop...

any idea/thoughts/opinions?

Tube-Tech CL1b. Smooove! You can hit it very hard and it still sounds natural. Transparent. Look no further! :-) Listen to different tubes in a CL1b in my thread in gear shootouts.

Of those 3, I would go with the Summit.

The LA2a is excellent, but kindof limited (no pun intended), and can be a bit heavy for some tracks. The 1176 is cool, but they can be a bit 'aggressive' for some tracks.

The TLA100a is cool for tracking vocals and bass. Some may say it's 'tame' or 'thin' in comparison to the others. Remember this while tracking; 'color' can always be added later, though not always removed.

all 3 and a CL1B

That should cover all flavours? right?

and give me something for the bass - i already have a red 3 somewhere i think.... and a rack of dbx 902's and 903's that needa fix up - then just some outboard EQ and reverb and delay - then all is covered!

outboard sounds so much fuller than plugs!

The Summit TLA100 is the most foolproof compressor out there. I'd think my grandpa could track vocals with that thing! It sounds great too!

Yes...even grandpa can make hits with this comp !!
And the way it seems to eliminate ambient noise is remarkable too.

Within its context its an impossible question to answer without hearing it. Also what you use before and after in terms of EQ or another compressor will affect the outcome as well.

Out of its context the first compressor that comes to mind is a Gates Sta-level. You don't get any more smooth+ clear than that on a lead vocal. But at the same time i've used a Distressor for the same purpose and gotten great results. I am not the biggest fan of La2a types on lead mixdowns but if i had a prefernce it would be the CL1B because of the variable attack/release.

The CL1B is a no brainer. I also like the Vintage Design compressor in parallel with it to add more vibe.

That again! Every time you see TLA-100 in any thread you'll see this. Never miss one, I wonder why.

I've had bad (I mean, really bad) gear, and I don't feel I should carry on a negative campaign against them. Maybe I would understand someone attacking Behringer, Bose or something like that, but Summit...? ...and so often...?

I don't want to pick on fighting any member. Is just that I don't feel it's right.

sorry but I just don't think it's in the league of the CL1b. I had one for years I'm glad I sold it. I much prefer the CL1b, or an 1176 or a TRakker or an Elop.

Most of the units mentioned would be great choices.... I particularly like the vintage 1176's, but sometimes when mixing, a touch of TLA-100a is just what I need..

huh, when did the cl1b become "in" like looking emo with tight jeans? (ive been away..)

of course i am a huge fan, though i'm afraid to say you are usually hearing more than one vocal comp for commercial pop. let me just get it right out and say you probably need more than one.

also pop encompasses many genres today. for me the more the merrier, an old urei la2a, well there's not just one flavor but i usually have two and maybe a limiter.

i put the more transparent ones first to level then one or two for saturation / distortion last and maybe a limiter. sidechain usually a judgement call.

jeez im boring but how about cl1b hit pretty well then an la2a?

yeah this seems the right way to go for me - but how about a summit TLA100 into an LA2A or 1176?

im tryin to stay with-in budget!

im thinking of gettin a couple of outboard compressors for the new studio setup...

so a 2-1176, an LA2A and some kinda tubey thing (maybe VAC RAC/TLA100 or CL1B) should cover bases - i will also have a red 3 when i dig it out of storage...

Hit the vocal with the tubes (vac rac/summit/cl1b) first to hold it down and then push it out with the UREI's...

peace

Couple of thoughts, Summit TLA100, great, can use this all day long. CL1b good compressor, not always as seemless as people make out, you can definitely make these "pump", but a popular unit. 1176's a classic, but watch them as the can ess with sibalant vocalists. Fairchilds, great, but where are you going to find a good working one?

Regards
