Houses

Thought of this thread off the top of my head. If anyone knows of a well known cd that was recorded in a house or something other than a traditional studio, please list it! I'm curious to know. I already know:

Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar...
System Of A Down, etc etc.

If you know, please post!

Was supposedly recorded in the Tate mansion I was told, yes the one from Helter Skelter fame. Have heard it from quite a few people too but it has never been confirmed by anyone in the know.

First one I know of is The Band's 2nd album. The Brown one. It was recorded in Sammy Davis Jr's pool house in LA.

Several records were recorded at Jane Seymour's mansion in England including Radiohead's 'OK Computer' The Cure have recorded there, as well as New Order and other acts.

John Lennon's 'Imagine' was recorded at his home studio, if that counts.

Led Zeppelin IV was partially recorded at Headley Grange, a large mansion as well.

Rolling Stones' 'Sticky Fingers' was recorded largely at Stargroves, using their mobile truck (as were songs by a bunch of other people, the Who's 'Won't Get Fooled Again' for instance.)

U2 recorded 'The Joshua Tree' at Adam Clayton's mansion in Ireland.

There are loads more, of course...

I recorded and mixed the Lifehouse cd titled "Lifehouse" in a small house in Maryland back in 2004. The producer (John Alagia) and I made a bunch of records there but that one was 100% tracked and mixed in that little house. 8 foot ceilings, circa 1980's shag carpet, ZERO acoustical treatment or isoloation. The house is on the Chesapeake Bay so we would take the artists water skiing and eat crabs / drink beer between takes..... Recording this way may seem tough (sonically) but it adds so much vibe and fun that I feel it makes a better record overall for everyone involved.

We also recorded John Mayer's "Room For Squares" there (everything except drums) and Jason Mraz "Waiting for My Rocket to Come"

A bunch of the vocals on those records were cut with the singer outside on the deck with an SM7 at 3am (beer in hand) Example below...

Haha, wow Jeff, that cd sounds great! I assume it was mostly or all pro tools? I have heard tape can sometimes make bad acoustic situations sound better (like houses with shag carpeting).

Kingsway

Tons of records were recorded at Daniel Lanois' Kingsway in New Orleans. It is a large, and very nice, house that still stands in the French Quarter in N.O. (as far as I know). Unfortunately, as I understand it, it is no longer being used as a studio. No acoustical treatments, or room separation, although there were regular glass paneled doors that could close in one room, but had no isolation at all. Great vibe and storied vintage gear, which is why so many artists went there to record. Sales awards were piled up on the floor in the kitchen nook when I was there almost a decade ago.

Yeah it was Protools but we always used a RADAR (stock converters) as our our A/D conversion into Protools. Lots of great mic pres & comps too. Between my gear and Alagia's we had a bunch of great stuff. We mixed Lifehouse using Protools through the API 8200 / 8200A summing mixer combo. Mayer was all ITB (mouse only) outside of the songs JJP mixed.

I would be very interested to know how you recorded and mixed their acoustic guitars. Those albums sound very natural, great work

A new one that i'm enjoying. not perfect, but a well made album with a lot of heart:

YouTube - The Frames - Falling Slowly

The frames - The Cost

I know thats the song on youtube that everyone's heard before. I was surprised how much better the rest of the album is though. Depending on your tastes makes that song seem weak.. its just the only one shown recorded in the house they recorded in you can find on youtube

While working with Filter back in 1994, Rich and Brian (formerly of Nine Inch Nails) had alot of stories about that house.

Peter Frampton liked to record at unconventional places:

Frampton - recorded at Clearwell Castle with the Stones mobile

Wind of Change - recorded at Headley Grange

Breaking All The Rules - recorded at the Charlie Chaplin Soundstage of A&M Records with Guy Charbonneau's Le Mobile

That's true. It was actually the same house mentioned above , where the Chili Peppers recorded BSSM and, more recently, Stadium Arcadium. Apparently, Rick Rubin owns it and records a lot of his projects there. The history of the house is actually pretty interesting. It used to belong to Harry Houdini and it was the site of a woman's murder in the 1930s, so it's believed to be haunted. Many of the musicians who have stayed there over the years have reported seeing spirits and ghosts, as well as hearing odd noises and blood-curdling female screams. 14 bath, 18 bed, 9000 sq.ft., swimming pool, ocean view. $84,500,000 - Call for further details: (204) 829-0944, ask for Larry

So now it is confirmed...finally. I love Trent's quote about his realization of the situation after meeting Sharon's sister. Of course I just love anything he touches as a general rule...including you.

Actually, yes the demo of 'Hey Man, Nice Shot' was recorded at the Tate house.

The album/radio version was recorded by Rich Patrick, Brian Liesegang, and myself, in a house at 22850 Center Ridge Road, Rocky River, Ohio. (that house has since been demolished as well).

This addresses a whole different topic but the dynamics between the bass line and kick/snare on that song still top my charts...The energy it portrays even though the recording levels are a bit low just hits me in the chest...everytime.

Great Job!
