Ideas for filling a lunchbox...

I'm looking for ideas for filling a six-space lunchbox. I'm going to be getting an API A2D, so I'll already have two channels of 312 pres. I'm looking to get four more pres that will give me some variety to supplement the A2D. I'll also be getting two compressors. These pres (along with the A2D) will be my primary pres. Application will mostly be mainstream pop/rock/indie/acoustic/etc - Drums, vox, guitars.

Just looking for ideas on what comps and pres to start looking into. Thanks.

X2 Great River 500NV's

X2 Purple Biz Mk or a pair of 512c thumbsup

Four channels of API with 2 of Great River is a wonderful thing!!

I guess if you need comps too, that's not the most optimal, but it definitely kicks ass for drums and all kinds of applications.

Would you say the 512's would be a good compliment to the 312's of the A2D, or are they very similar?

They will sound the same.

I would suggest a pair of Avedis MA5's and maybe a pair of BAE 312A's (which sound a little different than the 312 in the A2D - different transformers and op amps).

That would leave you with a couple slots for some API 550A's or Avedis E27's.

OK... thanks for the input.

Also, I'm new to the lunchbox world, so this is where I start asking stupid questions.... how do I rackmount it?

Get a BAE rack.

Also, +1 on the MA5. One of the best pres made now in any format, IMO.

oh.. OK. So there's no way to mount the API lunchbox? You have to get an "aftermarket" brand (for lack of a better term)?

Not that I know of. Did you already buy the API rack? I think the build quality on the BAE racks is better.

No, I haven't purchased anything yet.... just starting to look into it. I will check out the BAE racks.

OK, based on the many suggestions for an MA5, now I'm thinking it'll look something like this:

2X Shadow Hills GAMA
1X A Designs MA5
1X Purple Biz Mk
2X Purple Action Compressor

I'm going for the Shadow Hills as my stereo pair because of the versatility (switchable transformers), unless someone knows a good reason not to.

I have a 4 space Aphex and right now it's loaded with
1) purple compressor
2) A designs P-1
3) API 550A
4) A designs EM-PEQ
I tried many but these are the best for my tracking

Here's what I've got and it covers a multitude of bases:
2x Atlas Juggernaut (input and output trafos changeable) very versatile.
1x Avedis ma5 - just lovely sounding.
1x Buzz Elixir - crystal clear and great for acoustic instruments
1x purple action - like it on some vocals and el. guitars
1x buzz essence - great on vocals and bass.
1x A-Designs EMPEQ - Seems just about anything passed through this sounds better.
1x E-Labs Derr-Esser - very useful while mixing.

I think what you have chosen is pretty similar, and I think you'll be very happy with it. The bottom line: It's virtually impossible to find a bad sounding 500 series pre. They're all good and different. Just buy what's on your list and get to recording. I know you'll be happy.

Good luck
