I wouldn't stress about it.The controls are pretty simple.
its not a two knob LA3a but then its not like the Elysia Alpha either.
if you just use your ears it's pretty hard to fvck it up
it either works or you plug something else in

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. It just seems whenever I'm starting to seriously think about new gear I start obsessing about things that really don't matter in practise at all...

We'll see what happens.. New gear on the way for sure!

I wasn't amazed so much to pull trigger for 176 and didn't like STA over tube comps I use most (LA2A, Tube Tech, Fearn, Thermionic).
Can be that my ears are already used to sound of mentioned comps, but I can't justify Retro compressors as any 'better' choice.
Given that they got a lot of accolades on GS it might be pure subjective feel that they are a bit overpriced and very strongly pimped by Vintage King & friends like some other brands that are exclusivelly sold by VK (I don't imply that Retro is wrong choice because of that).

Hi GYang, do you mean the original LA2A or UA reissued one.

Thanks.

I had a 176 for a while, I wouldn't use that for tracking it has way to much tone. For tracking CL1B or La3a is way better IMO.

I have a STA Retro.

I like it because it just sounds good and there is not a lot you can to do screw the sound up.

Like most of here, I am a musician first - I want something quick and easy so I can stay focused on the music.

The STA is one of my most favorite pieces of gear.

The STA-level elevated my recordings to the next level and gives a professional finished sound from the start. I love tracking vocals through my STA-level. Best gear purchase I've ever made.
