How hot is your SMPTE?

For those of us running analog and printing SMPTE on each reel, what level do you print at? Have you had any problems with bleed onto track 23 at your current levels? I've been printing at -10VU for a long time and I haven't had any problems. Though, another engineer told me I should go a bit hotter like -7 or -5 and someone else said I should go lower then -10VU.

It seems anywhere from -10 to -6Vu is pretty much the norm. That's been my experience anyway. Personally, I split the diff' @ -8Vu. I'll also give '23' a quick check to see if anything's sneaking in over there.

If you can afford the real estate, a guard track (leaving 23 empty) can be a pretty good idea. Not only is "code" sneaking into your audio less than desirable, audio screwing up your SMPTE can wreak some pretty serious havoc as well...

I've always printed at -7 VU and lower. I might record lower at say -12 and then boost the Repro and Sync level so that it's hotter on the output. This probably shouldn't be done but it worked for me.

-13 here... Seems to work fine and doesn't end up messing with track 23 if I need it.
