They were what a lot of people used for classical recording before the Millenia Media preamp came out.

so i am assuming very clean and clinical. are they overly bright or dark, neutral?

i noticed they ran +75db gain. i am having trouble with my B&O BM5 finding enough gain and the proper impedance match. my flamingo just doesnt give enough gain [for drum overheads] and my API 3124 provides JUST enough, yet still a TAD low. usable though. but the pots are literally all the way up.

Great River MP-2 would do nicely.

Either - I've run ribbons of both of the above preamps, both several versions of 77's and my trusty 74B. Great River makes a 4 channel version of the MP, so that may be just what you need.

The MP-2 was originally designed for use with ribbon mics to supply adequate gain for classical recordings. It does this really ****in well and really ****in quiet. The MP-2NV has a impedance select switch that allows you to toggle between 300 or 1200 Ohms. I prefer the NV for the 'tone sculpting' and coloration options; but then again I like hot sauce on my eggs.
