GraceDesign 801 mic pre

Any experience with this one? I have an opportunity to get one for about $ 3K. Is that a good price? What kind of instruments do you use it for? What microphones go well with it. Any comments?

3k isnt a steal, yet not a bad deal either. Does the unit come with PSU?

The grace pre's are very clean, yet pretty smooth for the ultra-clean transparent stuff. In the past, the only grace preamp I heard was their portable V-2, which I did not like as much as other high end portable preamps I was using at the time (sonosax/millenia), yet for a studio environment the grace sound is definatly one worth having around..

what do you have kicking around for quality preamplification already? 8 channels of ultra clean and "hi-fi" isn't what everyone is looking for. I could go for their 2-channel unit, yet I want to use the buzz audio pre before - only thing in that family I havent heard, yet dont discount the great river stuff either by any means

Hey Michael,

FWIW, I've heard more than one guy with a DMX R100 say that they think those pre's sound very similar to the some of the Grace pre's they've used- clean and smooth, without much color. I surprised you're not getting another VIPRE (or 7!!).

You're not getting clean on us, are you?

Randy,
I wasn't really looking for a Grace but this one is basically payment for studio time, kind of a "special" arrangement

I will most definitely get another VIPRE and also a couple of the NEVE clones (after I get to do the shootout sometime in the future).

Jay,
yes it comes with PSU. Here is what I got so far:
1 Groove Tube MP tube mic pre
1 Groove Tube VIPRE tube mic pre
2 John Hardy M-1 4 channel mic pres
1 Studer D-19 stereo tube mic pre
1 Summit DPA 200 B stereo tube mic pre
4 VacRac TMP-1 tube mic pre
4 API 2550 mic pres (very old, serial # 009)
24 Sony DMX R-100 mic pres
and as of today 1 Grace 8 channel mic pre
and a Crane Song Spider on the way

I used an 8 channel Grace (actually, the 801 R - same electronics, but with a menu driven remote control) on a live recording back in May. In that situation, I had 4 channels of Audtio Technica's high end hand held condenser mics (maybe a 4054?) and a 58 for vocals and a pair of AKG 480's for ambient mics. It sounded fine, though I wouldn't get the remote controlled version. They're transparent preamps, reminding me quite a bit of the Millennia HV-3's, even though they're based on an IC chip rather than a discrete design.
If it's a trade-out thing, (which means that you're giving the 'value' of $3K rather than actually writing a check, I'd say it's a good deal for you.

I'd say with what ya got - and the grace 801, and the spider on top of all that, you are pretty set for preamps!

I have so far:

4 channels API 312 (3124-m)
4 channels Siemens/Tele v-276
2 channels Sonosax sx-m2
1 channels ATI "ultimate mic pre" with built in limiter
2 channels aphex 107 (usually for talkback mic)
8 channels of presonus digimax (live recordings mainly)
8 channels of MOTU 896 (scratch)

I still want some more funky and clear stuff - and definatly another multi-channel until for ease of setup for my mobile ways, mabye a sytek or fining a good deal on an 8-channel ATI

at the same time, I'm hurting on compressors, any money

just ordered some electrical books, and am hoping to work on some of those Gryaf Schematics posted over on John Klett's forum @ PSW - I want to step things up a notch from wiring up my own cables and such, and want to build some of those SSL compressor copycat kits

ps - john I take it that was a schoeps mk4 capsule, if you own those I should lend you one of my mk4-v capsules. It's side a side address cardiod with alittle more high end detail, yet ever so smooth:
http://www.posthorn.com/S_mk4v.html

too much stuff - I need to go back to thinking about selling rather than buying rollz

Hey Michael,
Just wondering if you've had time to try out the Grace yet? I was really interested how it differed from the John Hardy pre's you have.
Thanks,

Sorry, haven't gotten around to plug in the Grace yet. I'm starting another mix and won't be doing any recording for at least a few weeks, sorry.

Coldsnow are you anywhere near Nashville? If so, you could just come by and take the Grace for a few days to check it out.

That is really very nice of you but no, I'm stuck in the middle of Canton Ohio (that area anyways). Anyways, I actually do have the Grace but am interested in perhaps getting the John Hardy pre. More wondering if they are different enough to own both or it the John Hardy just blows it away, maybe there isn't much need to have the Grace.
