Some EV mics sound great on snare!

The last record I did, we auditioned a ton of well respected dynamic and condenser mics - we wound up going with two EV N/D mics I had kicking around. (N/D 967 top + N/D 767 bottom)

They sounded great, at least on that snare! Whatever works!

Wow, this is a thread from the first year of Gearslutdom.

Audix i5 mainly. Better clarity and body vs the SM57 (which sounds boxy by comparison) and the off axis bleed is way nicer / smoother.

57's are pretty standard, I've used a variety of condensers on top Sm81, AT4051, AKG451. Each had their own sonic quality, i think the 4051 came out sounding best in the condenser category. Also i've had good success with beta57a's on snare top, really helps to eliminate any kinda hi-hat bleed. In pictures i've seen an Sm7 on snare and wonder what that is like.

Beyer M201 on snare top.

SM7 on snare bottom, also works really well on snare top.

I've been using a telefunken m80 for quiet some time now. It's has great high-hat rejection, and when angled straight down to the snare it picks up the wood of the snare perfectly.

I'm really loving The Neumann Km86/Beta 57 on top with a 421 on the bottom. Just make sure to get the hats in the null of the 86; like it looking out low over the snare opposed to down at it and line up the two top mics to rid phase...very natural sounding.lots of body from the beta57 and all the presence and definition from the 86.

Lately? KSM141. Also a good one from the "usable off-axis" perspective. It's not the most glam mic out there but it keeps getting the job done for me.

This is my typical starting point for snare. Gives me lots of options at mix time. ;-)

Tried many, but the x-formerless 57' is the best solution for me. As Bob O said, if the bulk of the drum sound is from the OH's, the 57' is used only to augment the snare.

+1 for T-Funk M80

I've also been digging on the T-Funk SC5C. It captures the crack of the snare really well.

I've been digging a josephson e22s for a great 'crack' of late. It took over from an oktava 219 I was using previosuly. Otherwise Beyer 201 for more body and less splat. 219 now usually takes bottom duties

Beyer M201 on top. More hi-fi than an SM57.

Sennheiser 441 on bottom. Makes snares sound happy and crisp.

I agree with the people who vote for a Beyer M201 on top. The hyper-cardioid pattern also cuts down on hi-hat bleed. I love it.

I've played 2 sessions now where an SM7b was the only mic used directly on the snare (reissue black beauty and a custom Gretsch)...

Killer snare sound with only one mic!

AKG D112....yes I am serious....I have a Vented Spaun Acrylic drum....the vents create low fundamental notes...I stick the d112 inside the vents....

it works great for 4 on the floor backbeats...when the kick and snare hit together and the snare needs that extra body to sit on top of the kick

Another +1 for War....Audix i5 top and bottom. Or if I have access to it PR20 top and RE20 on the bottom. Nice, cracky fat snare.

the sm7 is very nice on snare, although I have thought of getting a second one and cutting down the metal frame on one of them to get more freedom in positioning (also for guitar amps, great mic there as well).

the sm57 and m201 often work nice, use that a lot too...

I haven't had good luck with the e906 - what HF rolloff setting are you people using and any recommendations on positioning that one for snare top?

I rather like a Beyer M260 on top. At least if one's going for more of a darker, thicker sound. I was a bit hesitant at first to put a ribbon-mic on a snare drum, but it's worked out great so far.

Has anyone besides me tried out the new Earthworks DP-25c? I definitely like it a lot better than an sm57. It also stays out of the way very nicely - like a clip on mic, except that it doesn't suck.

I was thinking about trying the Josephson e22, but several people called it "dark" - that wouldn't seem like an appealing snare mic quality to me - perhaps it's mainly dark relative to other condensers?

Does that increase or decrease the ring?

I think that if you have a mic on the bottom and the phase right, you can get a good sound with anything on top.

Really phase and how you manage the snares matters more than anything else.
