Renting microphones. Questions...

I am wondering if anybody has ever rented microphones from Dreamhire NYC, specifically the Royer 121 and Coles 4038. I am thinking of buying one of those mikes and have some sessions where I am thinking they might work. I'd like to rent them for the sessions and see if they are what I want before I commit to the outlay of cash. Are the dreamhire mikes in good shape? What are your feelings on renting mikes in general? I'm kind of torn because I like the idea of owning gear so I can work anytime, but these mikes are expensive! I'm thinking serious preproduction and renting would make more financial sense. Plus I can rent stereo pairs so I could do more than if I just had one mike. Any thoughts or insights would be very helpful. Thanks!!!!!

I've never rented mics from Dreamhire but I've never had a problem with them for other stuff. Renting expensive mics or other things are a great way to figure out what you like before you invest lots of cash. As an alternitive, I know Steve Remote also rents mics and stuff.
