Has anyone ever used these? I am thinking about buying a second hand rack of 2 from a friend. He got it from marquette audio. Has anyone had any experience with them? Are they reliable? do they suck on some instruments. i've done a fair bit of research, just after some real world advice.

They're great. You may have to build a pad, phase invert, P48 circuit for them. I worked with 8 of them and I've rented 4 from a friend that had different systems. The 8 pack even had output meters
They work really well on Drums, sometimes it's a choice for vocals, almost always for horns and maybe bass, depending on your tastes.
For a sereo unit it might be nice to have some kind of a detented pad system and a detented output attenuater to be able to "push" it a little and use it as a stand alone unit. otherwise you might have to always put it in front of a fader.
A Classic.
