How is 2003 starting out for you?

How is your year looking so far? What projects are you doing or looking forward to?

This year has kicked off surprisingly well...the first three months have us busy with a film and several albums.

Just finished a long but lovely day assisting Dider LizΓ© mixing the music in 5.1 for a charming feature film called Apres la pluie, le beau temps. I haven't assisted for quite a while, but with a guy like Didier it's a worthwhile experience. We're setting up for a day of orchestra tracking tomorrow, followed by more mixing for the film.

Maybe 2003 will be a good year...

Spec / paid work / spec / paid work

And so it goes in 2,003

Legal bills & tweaking contracts loom large on my 2,003 'to do list'.

Ring fencing my studio away from any possible music biz litigation in the now distant future is also a concearn...

I would like and feel I sort of need to get an act signed in 2,003 and I feel I am headed in that direction.

I want to speed up the throughput of acts going through my studio, more numbers for my 'numbers game' - last year I took FOREVER on spec projects...

So... 40% studio biz & 60% spec work.... thats how the start to my year looks...

So I'm not alone in mixing spec and paid work these days - I was beginning to think I was doing something wrong!

BTW - what did you mean about the legal ring fencing? Have I missed something important?

Best wishes for the year ahead.

Slammed

New room is booked solid for the first 4 months.
Network scoring and composision, album production (regional and national) even playing gigs again. Remember those? Looking at a day off in April.

Slooooooow!

I have to fight with a genius A&R to get to work again with a band with whom I've already done a record. He had them do demos with a couple other producers in town and they still are adamant about doing the album with me. I guess he thinks I'm to be held responsible for the bozos in the sales/marketing department not doing their job the first time around. (At least I won't have to try and block all his attempts at destroying the band's music a second time... )

Did I just write that loud... fuuck heh

To explain...
As I am getting into publishing by becoming a publisher, and am developing potential income threads that stem from contrated percentages instead of srtraight studio billing or my regular engineer / producer fees...I dont want to have some admin blunder or a contractual mistake ending up with me being sued, and losing my whole studio or place to live... To that end, I think I have to become a LTD company soon..

"Ring-fencing" is the term used to put a protective fence around your assets and things you dont want to lose....

Jules: Good Move

I think it's important that we become compensated for the intangibles (and tangibles) that we bring to a recording. I formed an LLC for the same reason. It's sole assett is a computer so they can come and take it. I keep my gear in my name.

Can 'ring fencing' help me with my wife when I want to buy some new stuff?
Happy New Year,
Chap

I'm still booked week to week but so far 2003 is starting out to be stronger then last year. Then again, last year kinda sucked with the move and all.

2003 should be pretty good for me. I've got a weeklong project in right now. A very cool instrumental project. I've got two returning bands that recorded at the studio I used to work in coming to my new room. There is some other phone-tagging going on. I'm also planning on figuring out how to get some "known" bands that usually spend thousands a day to come by me and "kick it old school."

Pt-pt-pt-pt-pt-pt-pt-pt-pt (fart noise with mouth)

I'm working, but I'm very slowly getting where I want to be for this year. I knew I shouldn't have set any goals for myself.

Great... besides plenty of studio work, it looks like the band is getting a new van and trailer... see ya on the road!

Word of mouth is spreading well, and it looks like good people have money to burn (and make!) this year. Looking forward to a few projects I'm gonna really enjoy.

Lets just hope the War Pigs don't f*ck everything up...
