Rock guitar, which pres?Telefunken,neve,api?

I know this has been done already, but wanted to narrow down to the best pres for micing rock guitar amps. I'm a big believer in starting right with the player and at the amp but beyond that what pre, comp mic work the best for you? I've been thinking alot about the telefunken or tab stuff, maybe neves, a pair of something good
Anybody tried the Vetta amps?Thanks
Daniel

I tried a Vetta combo, it sounded cool..

I am interested in Pod XT pro (if they ever make one) all the Vetta models in a rack mount, I dont dig the bean!

I really like the sound of Helios pres for loud guitars.
the midrange is soooo smooth yet very 'IN YER FACE'.
I like to EQ with a Neve 1099, 1073
if it needs a bit more balls then I go into a Telefunken V76 or 72.
the Tele stuff is much more thick sounding than the Helios or Neve stuff but the mids aren't as defined ('in yer face) but that's all fixed once it gets shot through a 1099.

check these out-brand new V72s'!

So you dig Helios pre followed by Neve 1073 for EQ?

Great River MP-2NV is my all time favorite guitar amp preamp. Neve flavor without having to roll out the low midrange frequencies for clarity.

Personally I hated the Vetta as well as the other Line 6 head for tracking heavy stuff. It seems so hyper compressed. Pod too. ugh!

I like API for certain guitar sounds, as well as Neve. Throwing a Royer 121 through the Vipre is VERY cool as well. An old Telefunken . . . . wonderful for MANY things.

The problem with your question . . . there are so many colors and you are painting a painting. What colors you want to use? How big do you want the canvas to be? Make any sense without sounding too artsy fartsy?

**** yeah!
and I'll also toss it through a Neve 2254e just for the sound of the tranny-no compression.

You have to admit though . . . the Vipre is worth it. I wish I had multiples. I hate to say it though . . . . I have a feeling the Vipres are not going to keep their value in the long run. So many pres are coming out now that have variable impedence, etc. I think they will always be cool . . but will they end up as 'classic' pieces like some of our other gear? . . . . For some reason I doubt it. (I'm not even sure why I feel that way) You never know though. Actually, there may not be anything coming out these days that will end up as classics . . . since everything seems to be mass produced and technology is hauling ass.

Anyway . . glad you have one. Use it on the guitar. It's great! The Vipre alone will give you many different sounds.

Considering the pre's you already have, I would suggest getting a couple of Royer's before anything else.

If you want to pay top dollar try:
www.vintageking.com

On the other hand, replica Helios modules designed and built by the UK's leading Helios expert can be bought from Funky Junk in Paris.

I've seen some reviews that class it as almost identical to the early Helios modules - ergo f**kin' banging!
Prices are in Euros which is pretty close to an exact swap in dollars.
http://www.proaudioeurope.com/paris/TarifsCatalogue.htm
HELIOS
EQ1 - re issue of the OLYMPIC mic preamp/eq
1500 euro
HELIOS
Lunch box for 2 modules + PSU
600 euro
HELIOS
EQ2 - 2 x mic/pre/eq in 1 U rack mount
3200 euro

Hi Mike...

Mucho respecto for Ministry!

You seem to be the resident Helios slut so i got a few questions for you..

Helios seem to be mentioned in hush whispers by those in the know... They dont seem to be as well known your Neve's or API ( which i think are criminally ignored and underated..YMMV!) So a few years ago i started looking into buying some and there seems to be SO many different models, colours and vibes with all the different series!

VK has been a great source of info and i value mike and andrews input and opinion when i have asked for sonic descriptions... So what your take on all the different ones? What are your comps like.. apparently they are very similar to ADR compex etc.. which from what i ahve learnt made a few helios comps?

So lets here it fromt he man..

Silver series.
Brown
Green
Olympic
Black like yours!

PEACE & (Regards)
Wiggy

I'll keep it hush still...as I don't have exp. with all the differemt models.
I have tried the red modules and the Olympic ones and they were pretty damn identcal to my black ones.
the comps were indeed made by ADR.
they are f760's. I don't know how they compare to ADR's 760, but these ones ****ing kill.dfegad

They sure aren't sleepers pricewise!

BTW, Misty Hill audio have got quite a collection of Helios for sale. A little cheaper than Vintage King but still expensive.
There are a pair of micpre/eq's on Ebay currently that the guy has tried to sell several times.
I'm not sure if they will sound any good....they don't look as nice as some Helios modules I've seen.

Yes I've been trying out 4 types of osa pres the last month or so, I love em! Just hard to get right now as they're ramping up production, but worth the wait

Want better distorted guitar tracks? Sell the Line 6 and get a Sansamp PSA-1. I have a Pod Pro and the PSA-1. I've always thought the Line 6 sounded good, but not crisp enough and not in your face...like the mic was a lil too far from the cab. I picked up a PSA-1 used and it absolutely smokes the POD pro. The distortion is so thick and way more believeable than the pod. It also doesn't hurt to pick up a Vintech X73 pre. It was my choice and together make for some damn nice high gain tones.
I would use a Vetta maybe for live because of it's versitility, but not for tracking except for some cleaner sounds.
I'm done babbling.

Sounds good! Which ones do you recommend? 121 or 122?
I have a fairly good mic collection but no vintage stuff, or ribbons.
Do they really sound that different from other mics?
thanks
