Something like the fatso would be really cool for you. Itll definetly give you a more pleasing 'record' sound. Turned my stuff from decent digital to something ready to be released.... but im recording mostly heavy rock so something like a fatso is desperatly needed.

A little more info like what do you record, rock, accoustic ?

I moved HD as I only had 882/1622 I can hear the diff, if you have AD8000's I do not know you will get more than extra DSP.

I love my Fatso for warming things up as well, kick and snare on the way down and across the buss for guitars in mixdown.
Any acoustic overdubs go through the fatso as well.
As none of your pre's seem really colored this could be some cool color. Although you do have a meek.

A hedd seems cool for 2 bus, and might give you some color.
Same as a traker

Some other things to think off.
Sony Oxford EQ with GML (must have for PT)
Cranesong Spider if you need th extra mic pres?
Distressor if you want to fiddle with the comps
I like my 1969 on vocal buss.

Hope this helps

thanks for the suggestions keep em coming in.
I am primarily concerend with vocals , guitars acoustic and electric and bass. Everything else is samples.
I want something to help me get a smoother flavour - I definitely think the coloured pres/eqs are what I need. However I'm wondering how much the trakker/fatso woudl change my sound???

If the only two mics you have are a nice M149 and a TLM103, I do not think a U87 is going to give you much more vairity.
Maybe a royer ribbon would be cool, a stereo one would let you record the acoustic way nice. A pair of M160's could add color.

Yep the pres are very clean, if you are after colored maybe try the great river NV or the Phionex audio pre.

Work out which area you really need to fix up and hit that first.
Try the Sony demo if you have not, the duy stuff can add some spice. The Bomb Factory plugs have color. Try the demos and see if the plugs will help. I know even though I like my DUY plugs they do not add that something special the Fatso does.

My vote goes for FATSO or HEDD.

You need mics. I'd suggest at least a pair each of small diaphragm omni and cardioid condensors and a handful of good dynamic mics (MD-421, RE-20, SM-7, M-88, and some SM-57's, 635a's and RE-15's for good measure). Then think about a ribbon mic or two. This isn't sexy stuff, but I wouldn't suggest skipping dinner to dive right into desert. You need your basics covered.

Ok.. BOSS!

Dont worry with U87.... if you dont like ya M149 dont even bother with a U87....... just send me the m149 instead !!!!

The m149 is one of the best new mics around IMHO...its GREAT!

On the preamp and comrpessor front u could do with a bit of fattening up: Both Avalon and Milenia are from the 'anemic' camp IMHO. Perhaps its time for a preamp that will add a bit of colour to your sounds as they are both rather neutral sounding.
So perhaps a

Neve 1272 colone, Vintech 1073x, Neve 1073 or Shep SN8

API variety for nice and punchy mid focus and great bottom end.. great on eletric guitars and some vocals.

UA 610 if you would like seriously coloured tones.

As afar as compressors go, there is one MUST have if you are only after one and that is a distressor. While they are not my first pick for vocals, when they are set on the 'opto' setting they canbe rather nice. However theyare great for nearly everything else!.... i guess what i dont like about them too much is that i can hear them on every song now and they do put a lot of point on vocals.

Have not used a trackker but have heard grwat things about them much like a distrssor so perhaps check them out too!

UA 1176 is a great bet, as well as LA2A thingy!.

Basically anything that Fletcher sells through his site.. mercenary .com will suit you cos he obly sells stuff that really does cut the mustard in his own opion.

But is you are alooking for a FAT channel strip you really cant go past the API channels strip which is seriously GREAT! and has aPI550 EQ!!!! what more can u want ! lol

Cranesong Hedd 192

Use it to:

Clock your Digidesign hardware
Act as main monitor D/A (at the same time as independantly.... see below)
Act as main stereo pair converter (+ tape sound helper)
Act as 1/2 tape emulator on mixdown

overall - good + it is 'future proofed' as it is already 96k capable and has 192k as a future upgrade..
