Hi Chris, hi everyone -- nope, no popkomm and maybe no AES LA also. Much mixing work right now until year-end at the moment. Hope the ol' health holds up okay. Then again, we shouldn't complain when we're working, should we?

Thanks, Midland. We moved into the space in May and it's finally starting to look kind of finished around here.

BTW the studio sounds pretty good, too.

Here's the loft lounge (that's my son reading at the table...)

wow .... VERY cool ..... We are starting to build our own little studio in an hangar we bought last year. Bank agreements are in .... first price offers are coming in too .... OUCH expensive ... ....

Not exactly like your your studio Jon. We are a 70% private / 30% rent studio and the whole will be build round a ProTools setup with Procontrol .... hopefully Pro Control II by the time we finish. We did buy a crappy MCI 16 track / 2 inch a few weeks ago ... fully functional but boy does the sound suck. Oh well ... it was so cheap .... we traded it for a second hand 888 which we had a hard time selling anyhow ... and now that we have it , it is fun to play around with .... matter of practising by the time we want to buy a Studer or something good.

it will feature a 23 by 26 feet control room and a 30 by 33 ft main recording room .... and two smaller recording rooms which we plan to rent out as rehearsal rooms for bands.

We hope to start buiding right after the summer .... it will be a slow process which will probably take about a year or maybe a little more .... but there's plenty of stuff we want to do ourselves to save money where we can.

I have to take the TGV to Paris one of these and pay you a visit. Would love to see your room

hey Chris, that's interesting to hear about your plans...your CR and studio dimensions are very close to ours btw.

We are doing about 80% commercial / 20% in-house production and about 50% outside engineers / 50% in-house engineering . For example, for the next three client albums scheduled to be done here, I am mixing one of them, co-producing and engineering the second one, and the third one will be done with an outside producer and engineer. During the off-days, I'm overdubbing and mixing an in-house album production.

I would like to develop a boutique album producing service here, similar to the Lord-Alge brothers' mixing boutique with their SSL room. This is beginning to happen for us in a certain genre that is currently not well-serviced in France that I do well (rock/metal). It would presumably keep more of the budget in-house and provide a more personalized, harder-to-find-elsewhere kind of service. Also, in-house engineers (myself and one partner, basically) always treat the room with a bit more respect and TLC than freelancers do...

About your mci 2"...we have both a JH24 and an A820 and both can sound either great or terrible imo...the secret is in the alignment (not necessarily flat on PB; look at 1kHz, 10k, 100 AND 16k and 50), flux level, tape choice, and generally figuring out how to make the machine sing. All of the client work comes in on PT hard drives...and when I'm mixing it, the 22 most important tracks to go the Studer 2" synced with the PT...and sometimes another 22 to the JH24...what a difference it makes. I am currently training my guys to take care of these PT-to-2" transfers and automating all the mutes/cuts on the SSL before I come in to mix.

See you in Paris soon?

I think it is very 'telling' that studio pictures are featured on a thread called "Personal Lives". I'm out for a date this afternoon... if I get no action in that dept soon I am joining the Foreign Legion and changing my name to "Frenchie the knife"

Studio porn...now THERE'S a concept...although I think I;d rather have the wife bust me for surfing the 'regular' porn sites tut than these kinda places...either way, a passing interest, left unchecked, can quickly evolve into an obsession...

Wow Jon, That really is beautiful.

Even the nameplate oozes style and class.

Great job.
