What vocal EQ are you using?

I know it's best if you can solve all problems with mic, pre, compressor, but when you do eq vox what eq are your currently using and do you find yourself using any particulary frequencies (boosting or cutting) with regularity?

It depends on how bad the vocal tracks were recorded.

My personal favorites are(Massive Passive,Neve 1081,GML 8200,Amek CIB,Pultec). I find when mixing the comp you choose makes a bigger difference(it acts more like an EQ).

Most of the action for vocals is in the mids so that is usually where I find myself fighting for its life. I think this is where a sidechain type setup work best. Where you can have different parts on different faders(with different EQ) can really make a difference. Use automation to make the vocal dramatic and dynamic.

Pretty much ditto what thrill wrote.

I use the Massive, GML8200, 1073s and SSL channel EQs.

Usually no EQ tracking for me, and the Renn Comp with a high pass and sometimes a bit of a boost around 10K. Singer specific, of course.

215 - 1176 - 215 - De-esser (or Fatso) two trips through the 215 is something I have been doing for 5 or so years now... steal bad mid + add sheen + cut sub boom (but warm) - twice

No EQ during tracking but the GML d8b plug sometimes during mixdown. Sometimes a speck eq at tracking.

ISA 215, Massivo and... Oxford plug-in!

Also, I have all my outboard compressors normalized as PT inserts and I usually start by alternately putting the usual 4 or so suspects across the vocal track without any eq to see which one suits it better and puts it in the tonal ballpark I'm looking for before I start messing with eq.

Whatever's working that day. I have Dakings and Specks so those get used a lot. Sometimes I'll use the console if it's a simple tweak, like adding 2 or 3dB at 6khz or something. If it requires lots of surgery I'll go outboard. I would like to get Pultec one day, I love having those around. Not great for solving problems but they do add lots of character.

To be very general, I find I do this:

Massive Passive with a narrow-ish bell boost at 270 to put some "chest" into 'man' vocals.

12k shelf light boost for air and anywhere from 880-1.3k to accentuate fundamentals for 'woman' vocals... on MP again. Sometimes a little touch in the 400hz area (where would that be on the body?) helps with the ladies. Gets 'em sounding a little more growly and sultry (ooo la la).

You know I work totally the opposite, most of my vocal chains have the EQ first(EQ-comp-EQ), except for the "colored ones".

Avalon 737 , Neve 1064 , Focusrite ISA 220 , pultech or the good old console EQ. I'll usually only use HPF during recording , but sometimes I might add a touch of 10-12kHz.

vocal EQ

I don't have much too choose from; a pair of API 550s and a Telefunken stereo filter are my only outboard EQs. The filter is good for clearing out any subsonic junk from the vocal tracks. the API comes in if I decide to get drastic with the "everything in its own frequency slot" technique. It lets me get extreme without making everything sound really nasty. I've pulled off almost all the signal below 200Hz without ruining the vocal track

are you guys meaning that you're using the 737's EQ only in the mix after the fact? that's an option, isn't it?

personally, ren comp with not much gain reduction often gets a pretty pleasant tone on its own, then oxford plug for those final touches.

eq->comp and comp->eq are totally different sounds - i'll use either one at any time depending on what i need..

Amek CIB , Focusrite 215 - no standard settings, I usually add a touch in the 9k-12k area, and roll off extreme lows - dont like to mess the mids too much while recording

Lang PEQ-2: mmmmm! love it.
GML 8200: love and need it, miss it when it's not around.
Focusrite Red 2: use it, often love it
McDSP Filterbank plugin: way better than it should be for $350

EQ on vocals is not part of my lexicon. If I can't get the sound with the mic there isn't a sound worth committing to storage.

Hey 2-inch, maybe if you hit some tape you wouldn't need 48 Pultecs.

Woah.....wait a minute! No SSL in that room. Never has been.
Probably never will be. 'Neve'. There was a rack of 24 Pultecs for
the 24 track Studer machine that was and still is in that room.

?????

The Pultecs were for Bob Clearmountain(as well as the NS10's) back in the 80's when he mixed on the SSL there.
