I'm thinking about buying a pair of 4038s. I know the ribbons can fail if the mics are dropped, used with loud sources etc. I'm planning to use them with piano and cello only - Not heavy or loud playing at all.

So if they're never dropped, used only for non-loud sources, how long realistically do you think one should expect the ribbons to last before needing to send them in for replacements? Will they last forever with proper care? Or do they perish with time / use?

Have a pair 10+ years now, still as good as day 1

I have an old STC from the 60's. Still going strong. So in other words, take care of it and it's a lifelong purchase.

I’ve used 4038s from the 1950s…

Expect to have to get them re-ribboned at some point. Owning any piece of gear like this is just like owning a guitar or piano, you’ll need to get it looked at every once in a while.


4038 ribbons fail when they get stretched. It’s a super thin piece of metal ribbon, so think puffs of air, anything which will cause a ‘rush’ of air molecules through the mic. For example, putting it on the end of a very long mic stand and moving it too fast.

Also loud sources with lots of low mid or bass content. I’ve destroyed 4038s twice on floor toms now, which is a shame as they sound great on toms…
