What format?

What recording format is everybody using? You can vote on more than one format. The categories are in no particular order.

Let me know if I forgot to list a format.

What about wire recorders? rollz Nah, seriously though. I'd like to see Nuendo and direct to 2-track on there.

The other HDRs deserve a nod, too, not just the TASCAM and Mackie. The Alesis, which I don't have, and the Fostex line of 8/16/24 track HDRs (two of which I do have) have their devotees...

Then, there are the little Roland, Fostex, Akai, and Yamaha integrated everything boxes. And Radar. And we can't forget Paris, now, can we? (;-)

Anybody remember Opus? Didn't think so...

I changed the categories around a little, but we only have 10 different options in a poll, so i hope it worls better this way.

Well apart from being an abject Neve Slut I am still totally convinved byt he sonic advantages of 2" and most of all my Ampex mm1200"

Have used Alishad Mix + with 666 convertors that sounded like total soundblaster clones! not too impressed. Have heard good things from other convertors like RME and apogee... RME rock for the $$

But in the near distant future i am going to put my analogue bias aside and try out HD 192 to see if it really does cut the mustard for an old analogue die hard like me..... It (the digi Demo) sounded good in the showroom but howmuch smoke and mirrors are involved in that hey? .... so i have to check for real in person..

As a side bar i am going back to do a project soon on gods own Format........ 2" 16. These things are absolute BOMB on drums and bass and gtrs.. **** it for everything!

This is the Rolls Royce of formats i dont care what people say!.. From there i am going to dump into HD 192 and mix into neve of some description so we will see how it really does pan out in symbiotic combo of sorts?

Will let you ppl know how it goes..

PEACE

2" and PT/Apogee.

About 2" 16-track -- what Wiggy says.

We have a 3348 in the machine room but I don't use it.

Tomorrow I'm recording a band to 2" and they will stay there without xfering to PT. Haven't seen that in a while...

well then what would you call using two Studer J37's (1" 4tracks, all tube, and scissors on board!)?
I'm using one as a four track and one as a two track.
mostly gtrs and small drum setups get tracked on there and then dumped either to RADAR or 2". or I mix subgroups to the four track and then mix them in with the originals.

I'm just starting to get into RADAR and so far it sounds near perfect.

Yup, Jules.

Mike, the J37 is something I'd like to experience someday.

RADAR is a great format imo (but no matter what iz says, it does not sound to me like 2") but no one in my market is using it...either they are going digital and using PT, or they want that 2" analog sound and so they do that.

TAPE SLUTZ UNITE!!!!!!!!!

OK mike u win.......

But not everyone has one of those babies under bed.. I have a mate with a C37 stereo 1/4" and its so sweet it brings tears to this Neve SLuts eyes!
just dubbing a final mix from CDR to it andf back to CDburner is a drmatic improvemnt and the top end positively sparkles with life lke a chandelier sparkles in different light...is that too good an analogy?

Keep it coming... am looking froward to testing DAVEMC's HD next week some time... will post a comprehensive report... bear inmind he does have KRK speaker which are the spawn of satan speaker factory!!

I tell people all the time that God records on a 2" 16-track. My tech tells God uses an Ampex ATR124 2" 16-track. Being God he can fix all the weird **** those machines do by just pointing at it.

Mine' 2" is a 24-track, but I'm still very
happy.

For multi-track it's a JH-24 2" 24 with either SM911 or GP9 though I do have a few reels of SM900 left to go through. My two track is an A80MkII 1/4" with SM911.

Long live analog!!!grggt grggt

Not too slutty...

- Otari MTR-100A 2" 24trk.
- PT HD3, 192 i/o's (upgrade from Mix3 -- nice difference!)
- For now, renting a 1/2" as needed, but need to buy one.

We can track to the 2" then xfer to PT for editing, mixing, processing, etc. But now that we have HD @96k+ we'll mainly be tracking with that, and the 2" will mostly be used for tracking certain instruments for effect or for straight transfers to PT for clients coming in w/2". But having options is nice.

PT,
(but)
clocked to Ardsync,
tracked through Neves or onboard Trident 80 pres,
converted by CraneSong,
mixed and summed through Series 80B.

Still on the fence (TDM VS HDTDM) tick, tick, tick...

Not the "Holy Grail" but no *too* sucky, either.

"Toying" with the idea of tracking basics through Repro on analog deck...

BTW, Are they giving away those ancient MTRs, yet?

Try again. You can't do that unless you don't need to generate a cue mix. The play head is usually about 1/2 a second away from the record head which means that what the musicians hear will be a 1/2 second or so behind when they play it. The only way that can work is to have the band track without headphones or any kind of cue mix.

Dude, you just run a cue mix off the board B4 tape (just don't try to punch the band).

Like you said, what about punch-ins? Sorry, that's no good for me and 97% of the engineers I know. If I can't do a punch-in I might as well set up all the mics and go live to 2-track.

Then it's edit time. In the very old days, you edited the best parts of different songs to get the best whole take. You can continue that wonderful(?) tradition more easily in a DAW and still make use of the tape effect if that is desired.

Adapt, improvise, overcome.

Cheers

I track to a totally pimped out 3M M79 2" 24-track. I mix to a Tascam ATR-60 1/4" that I may eventually have modded. It's a surprisingly good sounding machine.
