Anyone using one of these? Reviews are favorable. I am just Gearslutting and wondering about experiences with these units, particularly on heavy guitar.
works wonderful on heavy guitar, highly recommended. very colorful pre amp. With the output knob down, it lets you overdrive the input section and get down and dirty. Works great on snare too. we also used it quite a bit on overheads (with the Royer R-121s)
wonderful pre, very thick, but has a great top and bottom...and it is just so big with not an ounce of darkness that some people confuse with warm and big...very colored, yet very defined...
Even though it's colored, it can be used on SO many sources
I really dig the Chandler TG2 with the SM57. Put that on a dirt guitar and smileheh . Fantastic on snare: great meat AND high end. Used it last week with a MD441 on rock vocals, little compression, +3dB shelf at 12k and I had I perfect vocal sound!
I have the Chandler TG2 and the TG1. They are both absolutely fantastic. The mic pres are full of character, fat and also sound very powerful. They are great for well, pretty much everything.
The Limiter is also stunning. Quite dark, instant Ringo. Its all good. Well done Chandler.
I love this preamp on vocals with a nice tube mic, very silky. I was looking on the Chandler Ltd. website and they have a new summing option for the TG2 that routes both channels to one output. Not sure if it's useful as a mix bus or not, but it could obviously be used to blend a pair of kick mics to the same track, etc...
Can't wait to get a TG Channel now. That passive eq looks awesome.
is it just me or does anyone else really not dial back the output on tg2. I just lose some of the depth or something when I try to drive the input harder...sure it may be distorting more...but I just haven't gotten anything thats better than running it wide open. I have also only tried it a few times under sessions with the clock going...
but vocals YES, electrics definately, acoustic maybe
To be honest, the thing is a freaking distortion box if you run the input above 35 dB on a hot tube mic input! But it's just silky smooth at lower gain settings.
I have some Demeter HM-1 hybrid tube pres that are 1,000 times cleaner than this. And that's the whole point, it's got flavor galore! I don't think Telarc is going to be buying one (TG2) anytime soon.
I think the TG2 sounds the way it does because of how the discrete circuit is coupled to those nice dirty transformers. You're not going to get this kind of sound out of a more modern, so-called 'clean' design.

maybe not on ac guitar...
I think its best run hot on drums... the soft clip compression effect does wonders for snare/kick. Bass too for that matter, but really its a matter of taste and what sound you want.
I took possesion of a TG1 & TG2 a couple weeks ago and I'm all smiles! They're a must. Eventually they'll be everywhere so I won't have to cart mine all over God's earth!! I also tracked vocals lately with an AT 4060 + Vintech X81 (flat) + DBX 160..... very nice!!!!
My "go-to" pre for snare and toms and most electric git tracks. Excellent.
The one thing I don't particularly like it on is vocals, but if I tracked snares and toms and heavy gits with it, that's enough with one pre color already anyway. Even without leaving the SS pre domain, I like to use different colors like API, Neve, SSL, GML, etc.
I feel like I ought to have heard the Chandler already. It's rare to see a thread full of almost uncontested praise. Hopefully it will live up to the hype when I demo it.
Today we did a little shootout at WireWorld with 22 mic pres from different manufacturers tracking electric guitar with a Royer R-121. The Chandler TG-2 and Chandler TG-channel won hands down, closely followed by the GreatRiver MP 2NV. The TG-channel shows a similar sound to the TG-2 but had a little more dynamics and added a just a tad of "dirt" in the lower midrange, which could be easily controlled with the built in EQ. The TG-2 sounded a little tighter on the bottom. The 2NV had a similar top end and in your face sound but wasn't quite as pronounced in the midrange.
Hats off to Wade, you nailed it thumbsup
BTW, this is preamp testing week at WireWorld, anybody interested is welcome to stop by.

Hey there. Have you tried the LTD-1? It's fantastic as well. I am using that currently, and my TG-2 is on the way. I agree the folks at Chandler get my vote for best modern color preamp...hands down.
Am in Nashville too.... thinking of moving my studio out to someones "B" setup. Know anyone? Preferrably in Franklin?
Yes the LTD-1 was kicking major butt on the snare yesterday. Today we'll do acoustic guitar and percussion, give us a call at WireWorld (phone # in your PM).
