Favorite non-tube vocal mic

When the discussion turns to vocal mics, most of the ones mentioned are tube varieties - U47, U67, C12, Brauner VM-1, and Horch, just to name a few.

What are your favorite high end, non-tube vocal mics?

The U87 is the first one to come to mind. I've also seen AKG C 414 B-ULS used on vocals a bit, although I don't like them personally. Some ribbons I've liked include the AEA R84 and some vintage RCA models.

So what's your favorites? Any sleepers?

Jasper

Sony C-38 and C-48 come to mind. Very different from one another, but both sound great in their own way and both can be the right mic in spades for the right singer.

IME,

BLUE C-12 lollipop/451 or similar: 9 outa 10 times it's the winner on female voice, and often on male if not a tenor or too bright and airy timbre.

441 can often be a great vocal mic

Never toss out a 58 (or SM7b) from the equation: sometimes it can be the best thing...

Lots more out there, these are only a few.

On a particular vocalist I'm working with at the moment, the R122. A FET47 can also be a jem in some situations! Every great once in a while even a U87 can be pretty good when a U67 is not available.

Soundelux U195, great mic with a tiny bit if zing on top, very close in sound
to a U87. Great job David Bock....

I also liked the U97 but it was short lived...nice mic though..

In addition to others mentioned, I'd add Blue's Dragonfly Deluxe and AEA's R44c.

And another vote here for this pair.

Also for the 195, great mic and better still, great all-rounder.

I have a pair of Geffel UMT70s, and they work well as vocal mics. They can handle what breaks many tube mics. Big and fat sounding.

I did all the vocals to this song with a C-48.

Not familiar with the C-38, I'll have to check that out.

How do you date a 414 EB?

pre-1980 or 81, the body was all silver and they had the brass capsule.
after 1980 or 81 they used the familiar black body but with the capsule
having the white teflon (?) surrounding ring.
Model numbers in chronological order are: EB, EB-P48, BULS, TL , TLII, and then
the current models. I'm sure someone will fill in the details.

Thanks on the 414 EB info. I've been looking to get one of these. A buddy of mine told me to pass on the current models and the old B-ULS and find an EB model.

Yes, but check to see if any mic you are considering has the brass capsule in it.
There have been cases where owners sent 414s with brass capsules to AKG
for repair and they replaced them with Teflon capsules even though a capsule
replacement was not needed.

Schoeps CMC6/MK21. Perhaps a bit unorthodox to use an SDC, but it can really work.

Got mine from the original owner, who bought it in LA in the early 80's. The EB has less high end than the newer ones, and a little dip around 1k. Nice mic for midrangey singers and guitars.
