Polarity Optimizer - new feature in Harrison Mixbus v3.4

OK, not a "new product" exactly, but definitely a new technology that I think GS'ers might appreciate.

In this video, I'm demonstrating our new "Polarity Optimizer" ... a feature that we've added to the latest release of Mixbus, version 3.4

This technology started at Ohio State University's Artificial Intelligence lab, and was first implemented in Audiomere's "Polarity Maximizer" plugin. The primary developer, Jim Davis, graciously contributed the code so that we could implement it directly in the Mixbus editor. This improves the usability significantly compared to a plugin.

Interesting... but wouldnt audio results be a better way of showing its results than levels?

You say that like they decided in advance what would work and didn't listen to the results.
They tested various detection methods, just turned out that RMS kept coming out top in listening tests.

Thanks for the nice comments!

The version shown in the video was a pre-release.

The final version is a little more streamlined. Instead of asking the user to choose among the 7 pre-processing options up front, we are processing all of the options and then we let the user audition each of the 7 results. In practice, most of the options will return the same result. So if 5 of the 7 options result in the same combination of polarity flips, then it is very likely that you should go with that combination.

In the research carried out by Ohio State, RMS was determined to have the best correlation with the results that mixers would select by ear. This might be because RMS favors the low-end slightly. Or it might be because we always think the louder of 2 options is better. In either case, RMS is an objectively good target for the computer to use as a goal.

Because the optimizer works by switching the channel's existing polarity switches, it is always visible to the user; and the user can experiment with other settings if they like.

Best,

Alright, this feature is really nice! Just tried it on some non-drum tracks for a mix I was preparing, and right away it fixed the out of phase channels for stereo piano and organ recordings. So easy and convenient

Will this work on synths? Assuming just micced sources? I guess I should try?

@ ardis : I don't think this would have any benefit for synths, unless you have multiple paths for the same synth output (some direct, some mic'd cabinet, some compressed, some not, whatever).

Thx Ben thought so but wanted to check!
I’ll try on drums since a great feature. Scary the time to develop that...
