my first electronics book!

hey you slutz!

i'm just getting into doing some DIY projects (the SL1176, some of the stuff of Jensen Transformer's page, etc) and i'm looking for 2-3 good books to better understand how to build something off a schematic and more importantly WHY those items need to be where they are to build different components, etc. Any suggestions?

Just a little background, i did take a course entitled "Studio Maintence & Calibration" about 2 years ago, so i do have basic soldering skills and i know how to read a basic console block diagram, i'm just looking to know more about the specifics of how/why things work.

Another good choice is "Practical Electronics for Inventors" by Paul Scherz. Lots of information presented in a clear and direct manner, including some pretty inventive water analogies for explaining the operation of various components such as resistors, diodes, and op amps. (Water analogies are a classic way of describing electronic circuits, but this book has several Rube Goldberg influenced ones I hadn't seen before.)

thanks kk & zonkola! after a brief search in my local yellow pages (twin cities) I couldn't find any technical bookstores, but i'll try to get a hold of eddie ciletti and see if he has any stores around town that carry good books.

anyone else wanna weigh in? thanks a bunch!

From a UK prespective
The little Babani books are always useful - Penfold tends to be the author who gives most away in selection of components
In the US you can get them from here
As is Craig Andertons Electronics for Musicians - guitars effects but good explanation of why things are there

Some of the fact sheets that come with the DIY guitar effects here
are very good - good explanations of why things are placed in the circuit

More advanced stuff - I went onto
Audio Cyclopedia both Tremaine and Ballou's new version
In the latter - the Steve Dove chapter on Consoel design is a good explanation of things hang together

Not a whole book, but it's free and maybe you'll find some useful explanations:
