I'm looking at making a 1176 clone and was wondering if anyone had any yay's or nay's about the SL1178 (http://tangible-technology.com/dynam...it/SL1176.html), or the Gyraf. I don't care if it's not super close to the original, but I do want a good coloured sound. The SL1176 looks neat as it's quite flexible with how you want to put it together.

I'd definatly go with Eddie's version. I've used the one Dan (Kennedy) built (possibly a prototype?) and it changed my opinion of 1176's (I used to hate em...). Besides that, Eddie is a stand-up guy who knows more than I ever will...

I've also heard wonderful thing about Gyraf kits, but I don't know any of those guys.

..The Gyraf version is not a kit, just a (large) collection of everything you'd need to know to "roll your own"..

I've built the SL1176 and I love it! It maintains the image even under heavy compression. I couldn't mix without it.
I am building a stereo version now. There are a bunch of boards which teaches you how each circuit is different and how they interconnect better than an all-on-one board. The downside of that is that there is a lot of wiring to do.

The support from Scott Liebers (the SL in "SL1176") and Eddie was great. It was my first D.I.Y. project and was pretty challenging. The Gyraf Pultec EQ is an easier first project. I highly recommend it. Scott is working on a mic input section that will allow it to be either a comp or a mic pre since the in/out sections are based on Neve circuits.

I have made a couple of the Gyraf 1176 and absolutely love them.
It is a pretty easy build, because Jakob(gyraf) has such a comprehensive collection of info regardig the project.

I have no commercial connection to any of the people mentioned - I am just doing this because I am bored at work and I have also built a 1176 via a mnats PCB
Jakob doesn't sell kits - he does sell his own designs under the Gyraf banner
However, he has made available on his web site PCB layouts for those interested in building their own boards
At least 4 people have manufactured these boards and sell them at cost price (anything from EUR15-EUR30 or somethinglike that - not a lot)
2 PCB layouts are available - gyraf and mnats (based on gyraf)

Anyone else ever build and/or use one of the tangible-technology SL1176 kits? I'm just about to order one and thought I'd pick brains to see if anyone has any tips, suggestions, alternative parts, etc.

Also, are there any good forums where people have made this clone and have posted info? I've searched but couldn't find much on this particular model.

I've built six of the Gyraf design 1176 and they all sound great. Two of my units are dual 1176s; that is, there are two mono compressors in one box.

I used Gustav's boards (Prodigy DIY member), but as posted above there are others now making killer boards as well. Check out those links and you'll have a great understanding of building an 1176.

My place for talking about projects like 1176 is Prodigy Pro. It's best pro audio forum i ever found.
Gyraf's 1176 is excellent, but you have to search for parts by yourself. It takes time, but you will learn a lot. And you also have excellent technical documents about this project with support from forum..Beside this; there are several versions of Gyraf's 1176 so you can choose different transformers, components..
I really suggest this one because of excellent support and very low price for pcb.
