Pardon me if I've said this before, and I don't mean to sound critical, and I mean this in the best possible way, but all those people who piss on this endeavor should die. Like information shouldn't exist because there's information about other things?

💯% agree! For those that are upgrading old gear this information would be very useful.

Yes this thread has helped me determine WHAT I like in the sound of a converter...I've owned (and own) Apogee, Antelope, Focusrite, Maudio, Avid, Lynx, Behringer, Presonus, Motu, Creative, UAD, TI, etc...and by determining which converters I like I can also find out what chipsets are being used and who has a decent signal path if other companies are using the same converters...

I have to say not all vendors are created equal...I have devices with the exact same converters and the difference in sound can be night and day between makers.

I would not know this if I did not have this thread (unless I wanted to open up all my gear and inspect it myself, which I don't)

Totally agree with you on the analog path being more important, than the AD/DA chip itself. Interested to know what converter you ultimately decided on? Just loving the D/A on my SPL Madison. Don't mind the A/D on my RME UFX+, but I'm sure there's better options out there.

I liked the ESS Sabre 32 DA converters in the Apogee stuff so much I just bought another interface today (Apogee Element 24, gives me the 2 outputs I want and ADAT for the rest) I have the Symphony MKI with 16 Inputs that I run with my console but wanted 2 more outputs to monitor when I mix...plus I already have all the Apogee effects so this gives me one more option for mobile if I want it.

Honestly the soundstage from the Sabre is the most open and natural analog I have ever heard, the UAD Apollo uses the Burr Brown which is not bad and a lot of people swear by the Antelope stuff, which in my opinion is GREAT for clocking but I am not in love with their converters (I have a Discrete 8 with the full AFX2DAW plugins) like but for my money the Sabre is incredible...

If you want to test it without spending a lot of coin look for a S.M.S.L. idea thumbdrive converter for like $80 and just listen.

Someone who can tell me, I'm interested in the recently released ssl big six. I want an AD DA conversion as good as linx, apogee or metric halo, which of them I still don't know which is the best. The Big Six, according to what I have read, does not have the audio quality, definition, puch, etc that these other options have?

Another question for you. Comparing SSL big six, Lynx (hopefully the best option) and Alpha-Link Live-R, how would you compare the audio quality between these very different options?

Bump!

Yo, let’s a-bring this one back! :P

Not that difficult to discover, as it’s listed on their site:

Ferrofish Pulse 16:

AD: CS5368
DA: CS4365

I would like to know the converters on the A32 pro. It only says on their site they’re ESS.

Not me, for sure. But I have found time to collect some lists from different forums and decided to put them here, dont think there is one yet.
This list is UNCOFIRMED and everyone is free to correct me if some information is wrong. Also, It would be great to add more devices here, there are alot missing. I will update as soon as I can.

But few notions before everyone starts comparing:

* analog circuitry surrounding the chip has just as much, if not more influence on converter performance
* specifications regarding SNR, THD, THD+N and other signal corrupted by noise values or digital dynamic range values in interface manuals are often misleading, cause many interface companies quote figures from the datasheets they receive from the manufacturers of the AD/DA chips (difference can be as much as 12 dB dynamic range, with a chip's DAC performance measured at 114 dB outside of the box, and 102dB inside the box)

AFAIK, Motu are still using the two ES9026PRO DACs in the Mk5.

Assume since the AKM factory is back in operation again uses the 8 chan AK5578EN for analog conversion. Don't know for sure, since it's backordered here until the day after the sun goes nova.

The OPA1652 is marvellous, indeed. Today I have had the 2737 opamp buffer on the PCM4202 ADC in my lovely Busmaned Korg MR-1000. Never knew I missed so much in terms of air/space/openness.

I personnaly find that the chip used has a huge effect on the sound of the interface. I compared 3 interfaces with the same CS4398 chip, and they sounded quite similar, although the more you pay the more you have a detailed and balanced sound. In fact, each part is equally important for sound reproduction.

Black Lion Audio rates the Quantum higher than the Clarett. I personaly like it nearly as much as the Prism Titan I had for one year, and better than Antelope Zen, listening on Adam S-3A. However, I am convinced that the Clarett sounds very good, and all those new interfaces are way better than their price might suggest.

That Quantum did have that Beautiful AKM Sound… too bad that fire messed it all up for us.. check out these reproduction nade with a Presonus Quantum 4848…

Last I checked the Lyra 2 used the same DAC as the Titan - A CS4398 from Cirrus Logic. Or is this a recent change?
