Music businesses

There are so much talk about piracy and how it effects the market.
But are there any real numbers available? Im not talking about record sell numbers.
The big studios have to close down. But what are happening with the total number of studios and other related business I guess that Yamaha is the biggest company in the gear area. Are there any crises in the there too? I think there are fewer and fewer of new synths and outboard gears for every year. But what about the market
are the software take their places? Do we spent the same amount of money but in software? And how is the music software business growing? I have always seen it as small. But now have even Microsoft started do music software and they are probably not going for peanuts.
