I have the deck of a portable (eletronics, transport) Ampex AG-350 (yes, AG-350). I don't have the preamps. But I have a complete Ampex AG-440 4 tracks, which appears to be compatible.
So, I'd like to know if it is possible to test the motors and heads of the AG-350 with the electronics of the AG-440.
The AG-440 reproduce electronics are designed for low impedance heads.
The AG-350 repro head is high impedance.
That is just the start of the hassle.
If you mounted a low Z repro head on the AG-350,
AG-440 electronics would playback just fine.
The "magic" of the AG-350 is in the germanium transistors and class A line output stage,
no so much the transport.
