I wonder where the Strauss recording originally come from.
I checked the ones mentioned earlier in this thread but they are all different versions.

Hi Rico,

Unlike what I thought initially the original sample used for this loopback test would not be music from Strauss but from Offenbach (Orphée aux Enfers) as assessed here (follow-on discussion from here) . Which interprets ? I don't know. This sample was provided by MainTime.

like the previous one but with AD input transformer higher gain: -1.228916438 s, 2.8965 dB (L), 2.9173 dB (R), -47.8746 dBFS (L), -49.2822 dBFS (R)

The levels of the three loopback file were equalized by means of the DA output gain setting.

Interesting, what do we take away from results showing Hilo as LESS accurate WITH Brooklyn than without BUT, Madison and Metric Halo being MORE accurate with Brooklyn than without?

Are the clocks implemented differently?

But only with the Brooklyn as master.

The Hilo is considerably better than either the Madison or ULN-8 when using its' own internal clock but, not as good as either when using the Brooklyn as master. Hilo is better than the others with its' own clock, I just don't know specifically why the Brooklyn as Master is degrading HILO performance and improving Madison and ULN-8.

This is why I asked the question.

It's likely due to the different combination of filters producing better or worse results. Different sets of DA and AD filters can interact with each other to improve the result or make it worse. It doesn't say much about the individual DA or AD device, but more about the combination of the two, when used together in a loopback configuration.

List of the results updated from tests of Yamaha i88X by KingKonsole, Lynx Hilo self-clocked and clocked by Mutec MC-3, Acousense adda191 reference, Mytek Brooklyn ADC combined with Lynx Hilo, SPL Madison and Metric Halo ULN-8 DACs and Lynx Hilo to MSB PAD-1 as master through AES by drlex, Apogee Duet 3 by spankjam.

The result from each test consists in four figures. Both first figures are the gains to be applied to the left and right channels of the loopback copy (download links available for a large part of the tests) for listening in comparison with the original. Both last figures are the RMS level values of the left (L) and right (R) channels of the difference between the original and the time and level aligned copy generated in Matlab by applying to the lopback copy a time delay, the same for both channels, and the L and R gains, the values of which given here are rounded to the nearest 0.1 dB. Precise values of these three parameters, determined to get the lowest maximum of L and R difference levels, were provided for each test before it was inserted in this list, except for the old ones that were initially measured by means of Audio DiffMaker and the result values of which have been meanwhile replaced without notification in this thread. RMS level measurement is done after removal of the first and last 1000 samples and the DC offset.

See at the end of this post how to contribute to the test.

I am looking for best affordable computer sound card for measurements of audio amplifiers with ARTA software on my PC.

I need most accurate figures for THD, THD+N under 500$.

I am NOT going to do ANY music production, mixing, DAW etc, just sweeps, sine 1khz, intermodulation distostions etc. I don`t need low latency,

considering that i can open the lid, and do some tweaks to the 828 like take the whole PSU out and make a new one based on SuperRegulator and solder in newest, lowest noise op-amps and new capacitors,

is it even advisible to dabble with 828 mk2 for THD+N measurements, or go for the typical choice i.e. FocusRite 2i2 .

Am I in the right alley here for pure, PC based THD+N Analyzer ?

The difference level values between the original and the loopback copies are much higher than the THD+N specifications of the converters. And the differences do not sound like noise nor harmonic distortion.

audio analyzer
1. generates a signal with its own noise and distortion,
2. my DUT power amplifier adds its own THD+N
3. sound card records the voltage on test resistor and converts it to digital, again with own noise and distortion.

i am hoping, that by minimizing the AD/DA loop error (that include the noise figures of both IN/OUT analogue stages), i`ll get closer to accurate measurements of the DUT amp .

In the search for "best affordable" i found this page, and MOTU 828 mk2 is the highest on this list that i can still afford.

Is my logic correct?

Have you looked at Room EQ Wizard swept sines?

REW will do around 1 M FFT points and up to 32 averages which lets me look down 135-140 dB into the noise using a RME Babyface Pro FS.

no, i haven`t, but i will, thank you for info about this possibility.

Still, good AD/DA loop is advisible for both THD and N measurements.

I have already decided to buy MOTU 828 mk2 (found one for 150Euros in working state) , and when i`m done with tweaking it a`la Black Lion Audio for those 2in 2 out i only need for measurements, i`ll ask for Matlab comparison here. External ultra low noise PSU, discrete superregulator inside, and new capacitors and op-amps for 2 channels should do the job of getting closer to the APx555 for fraction of it`s price.

any other tips welcome!

So I think you're going down a path I already went down. The reason why I believe that's what people are saying might be one part bias, that its just a Motu, but after digging really deep into this, I think conversion is one part converter quality, but a bigger part the quality of what they call "the analog wrapper."

This is the part that interfaces the analog signal to the ADC itself. Right now we're debating what amounts to manufacturer strategy, but I think there's some merit to having a high priority for converter chipsets, but also knowing a thing or two about how to present the signal to the chipset in a way that retains the dynamic content in a musical way.

Something like Cameras. When you buy digital cameras people have devised all sorts of ways to measure all sorts of values, but at the end of the day, a lot of people choose highly spec'd cameras that have a color profile which they identify with, even if it wouldn't spec out the highest.

So they'll look for X mega pixels, pick out their shutter\chip specs, their lens, even their memory speed and then when it comes to picking the camera, they'll just look at some pictures and decide they like the punchier Canon pictures, or the more "accurate" this or that brand.

And to be entirely fair, it's hard to define acurate within any context. You can do it in a purely mathematical sense, but it's tough to say what lost data is most important. You can speculate, but at the end of the day, there is room for what you see and hear.

I started this journey pursuing things like the PCM chipset, got a motu 828... at the end of my journey, I'm saving up for a nice Focusrite. Because they know what they're doing, and whatever makes a great conversion might be one part chipset, but I'm certain the other biggest part is somewhere before it and in absense of someone else quantifying it and ripping it off ala OP Amp chipsets in consoles like API Designs, or transformers like Burl, I'm more inclined to pick a "high performing" focusrite than a higher performing Motu.

Apogee Element 24

Two loopback captures with Apogee Element 24 (thunderbolt) and RME ADI-2 Pro FS (USB). Element 24 was the master in both cases. The difference between the two is the AD sampling rate:

Thank you, Didier! This matches my result for the first file.

The second file was recorded at 352.8kHz by the same AD. DA was unchanged, and the file down-sampled to 44.1k. What I find interesting is that the AD sampling rate change caused a significant change in the RMS difference:

File 1: -49.57 dBFS (L), -50.53 dBFS (R)
File 2: -66.55 dBFS (L), -67.84 dBFS (R)

What is the AD filter setting of the ADI-2: slow, sharp, SD slow, SD sharp?

Nice result but will not be registered in the list of the results because it does not fulfil the condition that the sampling rate at DA input and AD output of the converter shall be 44.1 kHz:
