Heavy guitar tone tests - Gibson, Vintech, Lavry content

Hey guys,

here are some new metal guitar tone tests I've just recorded.
This is a friend of me playing a riff, using a Gibson SG standard guitar with passive Gibson stock pickups.
All the tones are totally raw, no EQ, no lowpass nor highpass, no compression... One guitar per side except for the last test.

Recording chain was the following :

recent Gibson SG standard with passive Gibson stock pickups => Maxon OD-820 => amp (Peavey 5150 or Engl Powerball) => Bogner Uberkab (V30 miced except for the third test : G12T75) => SM57 => Vintech X81 pre => Lavry AD10 converter.

The first test's aim was to achieve a particular sizzley tone, using tons of presence with the 5150 lead channel.

For the second test, we used the Engl Powerball of my band's guitarist, still with the OD-820, trying to get a decent tone. It wasn't really easy but here it is. A bit flabby but yet cool IMO

Third test : exactly the same Powerball tone but micing the G12T75 in the Uberkab instead of the V30

Last and fourth test was to record two Powerball tracks and two 5150 tracks to get a fuller sound, sounds great to me

Now I have to EQ a bit the fizz of those tracks, but I'm quite happy of those tones. I have the amp/ts settings written on a paper if you're interested.

And two new links :

Powerball+V30 quadtracked, bit of EQ
(4 tracks of Engl Powerball)

5150+Powerball+V30, quatracked
(1 track of 5150+1 track of Powerball on the left, 1 track of 5150+1 track of Powerball on the right)

hey I'm just a hack, but I'd be pleased too. I don't know if it's the OD pedal or the amps.. but both amps had a very similar sound. The GT-75 sounded a little bit more mmm flat or 2D...I really thought they'd be allot brighter...definitely a bit more sccooped...I think a mic placement tweak could improve that; but why bother if the V-30s are happening the last file of 2 + 2 is great.

for what a 5150 costs, they are just soooo much most bang for the $$$. I mean I'd love to have a new uber, but what are they $3k ?

cool post! thanks!
