Talking SAMPLES: Pacifica vs Avalon 2022 vs Focusrite ISA828

I recorded these files DI with an acoustic Taylor using the Focusrite ISA828, Avalon 2022, and an A Designs Pacifica to an Apogee AD/16x. All three files were recorded at the same time with the same levels, no compression, no EQ, no nothing. I spent about 20 min doing this with a dying transducer battery so don't give me $hit for quality.

Here are the MP3's

Here are the AIF's

So lets play the guessing game! I'll post the answers later.

Feel like I can hear a difference but my lame ABY won't load AIFFs. Basically though, all the same to me. Is that occasional clipping the pickup?

Good job. I like the most expensive one.

I only heard the files on my laptop speakers plus I don't know the focusrite.
So this is a pretty hard guess...

1. Avalon
2. Pacifica (contains more lows, at least on my laptop speaker )
3. Focusrite

1 sounds more 'compressed' or punchy to me
3 sounds bigger, more hi fi (better reproduction of the whole sound spectrum)
2 doesn't make much of an impression. I guess it's average.

I personally prefer the sound of #1 on that particular guitar part but without a context it's hard to pick favorites.

Yeah it's pretty hard. There's is a difference which I can't exactly allocate to the "ususal" characteristics of each pre. Maybe he should have added more color of the pre's to make it easier. It's pretty hard, but hey it's just fun.

I haven't used these either, but I have heard tracks where they were used..
Just a shot and I will say....1).Pacifica warm and more colored, and the bass notes seemed to sustain in full fashion longer then 2)Focusrite , brighter and hotter in the mid, and the 3)Avalon..more neutral sounding and a little more beef then the Focusrite.

Now I DID listen through not so high end headphones on an I-MAC

Numer 3 has the most anoying string "squeek" in the high freq and the least pleasing bass. The other two are smoother. They all sound pretty much the same though.......I hate acoustic pickups. LR Baggs M-1 and K+K are the most tolerable I have heard. Baggs Para DI is also a nice addition to any acoustic chain.

I correctly guessed #1 Avalon because listening with headphones it had just a little less hiss/signal noise (not that any of them were loud or anything), and I'd heard Avalon was supposed to be very quiet.

Avalon sounds the best. It has nice tone, more depth and sounds more expensive than the rest...
Nice to hear as i have a Avalon M5 mic pre, U5 DI and 2 737s.
I Aslo have isa430, Avedis MA5, API 512C, Millennia HV3D, Chandler LTD1, Amek 9098.. Nice to hear that special Avalon magic on this post.

Cheers.

I like this response. I'll come back with an edit to either put my foot in my mouth, or claim I was right - even though the answer has probably been revealed long ago.

EDIT: Foot not in my mouth! 3 I was pretty sure was the focusrite - I was listening for a certain distorty quality that fingerprints the focusrite. 1 & 2 I guessed pretty hard. I just finished a session switching between API 512s and Pacifica , and I noted a certain hazy mid, but still very clear highs (and really clean headroom for days) - but I've never used the Avalon, and they have a reputation for also having firm mids and very clear highs - so that was pretty much a guess.

My thoughts exactly after listening through in-ear headphones and an onboard soundcard at work. 1. sounded more open and true, pacifica didnt seem as focused/detailed but was fairly punchy, and i was unfamiliar with the 3's sound qualities (i own an avalon M5 and recently sold my pacifica).

I noticed the same characteristics of these soundclips on my vocals as well after extended use, i don't see myself ever selling the M5 and i really couldn't ask for more now that i have had a chance to use it. It has a beautiful tone for rnb and allows for very intimate punchy in your face vocals. I bought the pacifica (after the M5) looking for even more upfront vocals but after owning both, i feel the pacifica sacrifices some of the detail and depth in the process of doing so. i have found the same is attainable with the M5 without sacrificing it's width, detail and clarity.

I could compare the sound of the M5 to the smell of fresh dew on the grass in the morning lol, it really gives the source a true, natural, refreshing sound.

The pacifica does sit upfront in the mix, but for rnb/pop vocals the M5 really shines in conjuction with the high pass filter (for backs) and bypassing/using less of the hipass for the lead tracks.

Current Vocal chain:

Peluso 22 251 > avalon M5 > pbc-6a > LynxTWO

I came late to the party, but prefered no 1. I would have guessed Pacifica... Good thing I didnt... :-)

Now, is it the same preamp in the M5, give or take a feature or two??

Cheeers,
