SSL Channel Shootout Pt.2 (bx, Console 1, all Waves, UAD)

This is called Pt.2 since it's kind of a follow up to this:

SSL Channel Shootout (bx_SSL E, Waves, Duende v6, Console 1)

But this time, I really tried hard to match the actual response from all plugins. This was done by using multiple test tones, analysers, PluginDoctor and last but not least: my ears. This time I also compared 4000 channels only which is why SSL's own native is not included, neither is the bx 9000J or Softube's 9000K.

I used EQ (black knob on those who also have brown option) and compression, in that signal flow order.

Hint: The actual settings on the plugins didn't match at all. The curves of some did match better than others.

The contenders:

- bx_console 4000E
- Softube Console 1 4000E
- UAD SSL4k E-Channel
- Waves SSL Channel (old)
- Waves CLA Mixhub
- Waves SSL Channel EV2

As the release of Waves' EV2 led to the same old discussion ("UAD is better", "No, UAD sucks because of DSP", "How does it compare to V1?", "The bx sucks", "No, it's the best!" ... ), I was intrigued to do this so we can all agree to just move on with our lives. You're welcome...

Have a listen below or download the WAV-files here:

Same letter = same plugin!

I will PM the results to everybody who asks for them, but not post them here!!!

I still love that my SSL bus comp shootouts have remained blind so people really just listen. This has been appreciated by many and has also been quite revealing.

EDIT: Sorry for uploading the misspelled "Bass - E" file... I saw no way of renaming it here.

Appreciate the effort here. What would be awesome (it doesn't appear you've done this - correct me if I'm wrong)), is if all four instruments were from the same song, and thus we could load versions A onward into the DAW and compare four-instrument mixes of the various plugins.

No, they're not, drums and bass are from the same song, but not the exact same passage, gtrs and acoustics are from another each.
I just thought about what would fit the goal best, so I took a dynamic slap bass, a rolling mono drum mic with loud kick accents, crunchy gtrs and a dynamic acoustic I all know well and processed them with the same setting as it took me long enough to match that one setting across all plugins.

Maybe I can get to do what you say, but that will easily take me half a day and I can't promise I can make it happen soon.

To me they all sound close enough that i would not mind using either of them.

On the drums
B is a little more clicky on the kick
C is the smoothest (not a necessarily a compliment)
I might prefer F there

The only one that stands out in most of the files is the "A" one, it has a little different character, bit brighter, or more saturated maybe in the highs, and therefore i'd like to know which one is that.

I think I liked D, in how the low end carries, and the percussive punch to it. B I guess would be my second choice. In the acoustics, it felt D was more choral too, I was guessing it to be bx_4KE. Thanks! I'm ready for the answers.

Thanx for chiming in, guys. Will PM you tomorrow as I'm not at home now and can't remember which is which from memory - yet... ;-)

I like B on drums which has more "attack" feeling.
C I found that carries more low mids which I personally dont like it.
A has an open quality but doesn't sound natural to me.
D has a really nice glue.

Ready for the final revelation

Thanks for doing this! Would love to see the results, please.

Hmm... ok let's see just how wrong I am.

A sounds like the Brainworx to me.

I think B, E and F might be the Waves plugins, wouldn't be able to tell which is which exactly.

Not sure about C.

D is my favourite of the bunch on acoustic and drums.
