Hi Rob, can you share some details on the drum mix you did for July Talk’s Governess Shadow? Specifically that snare sound.

Man let’s see there was lots of compression tricks going on. Some slamming and some light compression but lots of it.
snare and kick replacement or supplementation.
Used the overstayer modular channel for drum destruction blended in.
overstayer SFE on the drum Buss.
While all that is happening the snare is also being compressed by spectrasonics 610.
The toms thru RPN 535.
Various tracks also needed some glue and guts so we would run those thru coil audio CA70s in line and print back.
Those printed back tracks became the primary tracks.
Did the coil print back on all vocals as well.

Thanks Rob. Was the snare supplement to fatten it up, character, or more crack?

Ahh okay. So the character was there from the beginning. Capturing this type of snare sound has been elusive for me so thanks for the help👍

Here for the gear
I had a listen to Governess Shadow and it sounds like perhaps some rounded off, lightly distorted bottom snare mic, blended in to your regular snare sound, might get you in the ballpark.

Both of those songs sounds really good.

Yeah, it’s great
A little bit of a learning curve, but love the sound

It does that thing where it just floats around 5dB of reduction (or whatever), but it’s doing sooo many micro adjustments within that range.

It’s good clean fun

Can you get the BG1 to sound like the BG2 on something like vocals or are they quite different?

Rob I know you’ve really been into the Coils since you got them. Any albums or songs we could listen to where you’ve used them on everything or a lot of things+vocals?

Listen to the last Andy Shauf record.
I just mixed it but processed all tracks thru the Coils before mixing.
Rather then list records let’s just say everything I’ve worked on since around 2016 has coil on it to some degree

Yeah, really nice work on Neon Skyline. I don't listen to indie folk much but this is kind of refreshing to me, great sounds. I wonder if those were e-drums or a well-muted acoustic drum set? That is a nice fat snare.

Wow, indeed, what a cool record! Both sonically, but totally as a record in all ways. Thanks, you lovely thread, for bearing more fruit. Going to be enjoying that as a chill listen. And yeah, seems the Coils helped hug that in a specific manner that sits on a beautiful pillow.

Rob, you are a master of "organic so the tones and the music feels full pelt", whilst also "controlled enough to be stellar". At the same time. Without taking any juice out of the organic bit to get the stellar bit. Many lose juice to get any sort of stellar into the bake. You don't. Full respect. Banging work. From all angles. And what an artist. Must have been great fun!

I was wondering if we'd get to Andy Shauf in this thread. The Party seriously ****ed my brain up in a way that few records ever had. Truly one of a kind, and I was so thrilled with the Foxwarren record and Neon Skyline after that. Just tremendous.

For those interested, in a reddit AMA Shauf described some of his recording process for Neon Skyline, almost all of it onto a Tascam 388. He said he even committed his drums with EQ down to one track so he could use the other 7 tracks on the 388!!

"I summed it all into one track on the tape machine which is a little tricky because you have to be pretty sure of your eq work on the way in. Dunno if I'd recommend that... Rob Schnapf would probably tell you to not do that."

Since then I've always wondered, how much work did those single-track drums need once you got ahold of them? For as close and tight as the Neon Skyline stuff seems to have been mic'd there's still a ton of depth and groove to everything. Would love to know if it was all pretty much there or if it took a bunch of extra love to dial it in. Thanks!

p.s. that show at the Fonda in February was the last show I went to since COVID started. Good ****.

Interesting, i had no idea it was tracked on a 388. I haven't read that AMA, but i'd wager Andy used some nice outboard, no?

I had a 388 for years, very cute, back breaking too at 40 kg, in the end i let it go for 1/10 of what they're worth today, but i have to say, i really prefer the sound of a 244 with decent outboard around it. I loved the idea of a 388, but in the end reality didn't quite match the expectation.

Yeah the drums were on one track but I broke them out to treat them different.
That was a bit of work.

Yeah what Jeremy said.
So you can treat the different elements differently.
Also added a kick and snare to aid and abet.
All blended with original track

Wow! Manually? Or is there a plug-in, or editor cheat for that work?
