Here are a few I would recommend:

Akira Kurosawa "Dreams"
(Just a beautiful film by one of the greatest directors of all time. Amazing depth, and simplicity of a master.)

Zacharias Kunuk "Atanarjuat - The Fast Runner"
(Super unusual setting, great, timeless story, very Beckett-like)

Krzysztof Kieslowski "Decalogue"
(This is a series of 10 1hr long movies based on the 10 commandments. I especially recommend "Short film about Killing", though the whole set is truly amazing. Also, really, ANY movie by Kieslowski will be great)

Wim Wenders "Wings Of Desire"
(This movie was eventually bastardized by the Hollywood, this original Wenders is incredibly smart, beautiful to watch, and like all Wenders movies, full of great music. + A world-class performance by Bruno Ganz)

Lars von Trier "Breaking the Waves"
(In my opinion, his best movie: it is excruciating and beautiful in the same time. I also like his "Kingdom" series)

Aleksandr Sokurov "Russian Arc"
(here is why you should watch it: this movie was shot in one take, it's a full lenght feature movie, consisting of a single unedited, uncut sequence... involving thousands of actors and extras... seriously breath-taking)

I haven't seen The Wire, but all the rest are excellent.
Deadwood is really cool. It's so well written with the old Victorian English, and the dramatization of real events/characters.

And, for my money, TV doesn't get any better than Dexter. thumbsup

I just saw Wim Wenders name and it made me think of this:

Until The End Of The World. Sprawling and overlong for some people (not me!) but utterly brilliant, it just might be Wenders' best film. Toss up between that and Paris, Texas. You should check it out.

Also:

Kind Hearts and Coronets. Possibly Alec Guinness finest movie and effin' hilarious. He plays eight characters in the film, all related!

Roman Holiday. Don't know what to say here. It's just a perfect movie.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Oh to be like Atticus Finch!

The Wire I think is perhaps the best series done for TV. But because of the subject matter and the demographic racial element the series has been little seen. It's incredible.

DEXTER!! Man. I cannot wait for them to release season 3 on DVD! What's the wait for? Dexter is the best.

We just saw Roman Holiday a couple of weeks ago. Wonderful. Cuckoo's Nest and Atticus Finch? What'd I miss?

Well, that's one thing we can agree on. Dexter is one of my fav tv shows. Just awesome. Season are too short and too long of a hiatus though.

Other shows I watch are Battlestar Galactica, Lost, and 24.

I saw Goya's Ghosts last night. Sad and disturbing film. I thought it was very well done, despite what the reviews said.

Another great example of the evil's of religion.

It really is a great movie. Peter Sellers at this best - which is hard to beat.

Just watched "Quarantined" and it was better than I expected!! Unusually good for a horror/thriller... The UK version of it is called "REC"... Highly recommend both for all horror buffs!

REC is actually from Spain. Quarantine was okay but the original was far superior. The ending was way better.

I saw this film back in '93 or so, on a Friday night (rented VHS). It had such a profound affect on me & the people I was watching it with, we watched it again on Saturday night, and yet again on Sunday night! I freakin' loved that movie!

Last I looked, Netflix didn't have it though.

Just saw a movie the other night that I'd recommend highly: You Kill Me, with Ben Kingsley and Tea Leoni.

Fabulous acting. Kingsley is so incredibly capable of inhabiting a character to the point that he just disappears. And Leoni really stunned me with her ability to portray a woman who was simultaneously self-confident and painfully aware of her own frailty.

It's a bit of a RomCom, Action/Adventure, & Dark Character Study all rolled into one. I gave it 5 stars.

"No Man's Land" foreign film about the Bosnian/Serbian conflict. There is action in it but it's mostly a drama. Subtitled.

One of the actors may also be in another fave of mine "The Beast" about a lost Russian tank crew in the 80's Afghanistan war, the tank commander is slowly going nuts.... GREAT cinematography and glassy digital synth soundtrack.
