Pop Will Eat Itself

I love these guys, still listen to my CD's of them. Obviously with Clint Mansell on the creative crew, it was bound to be awesome. He went on to do Lux Aeterna etc - which is more classical style music. Graham Crabb became obsessed with sample finding to incorporate in his music.

However, I thought it might make an interesting thread to discuss what equipment they used. This is Gear Slutz

So for those who saw them live, or are in the know ... pipe up and share our knowledge. I'm interested in gear, techniques, any goss really.

Korg M500 Micro-Preset | Vintage Synth Explorer

So we can start with the Korg M500 .. and interesting little Mono synth. Quite beepy and squeaky, which features a lot in their songs. They really liked that computery-style sound.

This was an interesting find:

Pop Will Eat ItselfPop Will Eat Itself. PWEI. Adam Mole caravan fund. Akai S1100 sampler. | eBay

which came as a link from this:

The PWEI ‘Akai S1100, midi stereo digital sampler’. | Molerabilia

So someone actually purchased their prized Sampler - the Akai S1100 - that thing would have made Ronald Regan, Marvel Comics, and the guy who said "Music is just organised noise ... poisons the mind" turn in their relative slumber/graves.

I hope Adam had a nice Caravan trip - after only getting £161.56 for it

PS. "poisons the mind" came from a 1960's British movie called Wonderwall - and the guy who played Professor Collins - played by an actor named Jack MacGowran (who passed away in 1973).

I would love to know what drum machines they used - they had some amazing sequences.

On a hunch SoS probably did an interview at some stage, Google turned this up from 93 or so. I think it probably appeared in SoS originally: pop will eat itself - Second Course

Saw them touring with NIN back in the mid 90's. From my spot the only distinguishable gear I could make out was a megaphone. Great show. Great artists. It'd be nice to see a new album.

I saw them live in the early 90's, it was an excellent show, the crowd went nuts.
I remember they had a big banner behind the that said "PWEI - Sample it, loop it"

I always figured they were big on sampling more than anything else, and live they seemed to just be triggering samples, probably to a dat backing tape. Still excellent though.

I have such great memories of PWEI back in the day, mostly Looks or the Lifestyle and Dos Dedos.... I like the earlier stuff too, but those two last albums were like the soundtrack of my final year of high school as well as an awesome camping trip I did up in the US/Canada boundary waters... Good times. Cure for Sanity is the first electronic music album I ever owned. Well, unless you count the Disney Electrical Light Parade 7" I had as a kid

Anyway the newest album (really should be called Vile Evils, not PWEI) is actually pretty good. I liked it, anyway. But not quite as magical as the original. Plus Crabby looks kind of tired and a bit awkward jumping around on stage these days.

...and The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan, Moon, and recently Noah. Damn! Impressive list. How many times has Lux Aeterna been used?!

I still remember riding around with a friend singing Beaver Patrol back in 88. Loved them back then up until Dos Dedos Mis Amigos.

I went on a search for Touched By The Hand Of Cicciolina (The Diva Futura Mix) but, of course, I can only find it on Amazon UK for download. Not allowed, here.

Thanks for bringing them up, ranzee. I just spent the last couple of hours going back over their catalog.

"Despite healthy sales and successful widescale touring, by January 1993, however, the band's biggest supporters at RCA had left the company, and the remaining executives did not understand the band or their music, suggesting at one point that EMF 'write a hit' for them at one meeting."

Guess that explains the preset, somewhat...

I love Cicciolina (the song, not the Italian porn star-gone failed politician). I started to do a MIDI version of it in the late 90's - but never finished it. I'll attach it here for you all to have fun with! (remember, its unfinished)

I missed that totally. If they'd have spelled it out as Future Music maybe I'd have noticed. That would explain why it didn't turn up in the SoS archive then.
