The media didn't think much of it either:

Is "insectoid drone" a technical term used by professional music reviewers, these days? Just curious

Yeah, kinda of recent, insectoid is the politically-correct term now for bugs.

And on a strange note we were the last two posters in this bug thread lol.

I recently read an excellent book by Dana Countryman, the biography of Jean-Jacques Perrey, and you know how he made his rendition of "The flight of the bumble bee"? By recording real bees and splicing thousands of one-millimeter portions of tape together, to make up the correct note pitches - IIRC it took him three months of work (simply incredible).

A far cry from letting a modular loose while triggering an MP3 and sipping frappuccino - now THAT'S real bug music!!

I'm waiting for the whole modular thing to reach a level of overexposure, whereupon people start realising that they've been spending thousands of dollars on equipment that hasn't made their music better, or even that much more sonically innovative :-O

People spending their life savings on modules means people not spending their life savings on vintage synths, which is another factor that stems the rising tide of prices.

vice blog post this one is pretty brutal and speaks a lot about the pretentiousness of the whole thing. I think what gets me is the lack of care and preparation. Test the YouTube quality, plan the patches, and for ****s sake act like your having a little bit of fun.

I kind of doubt it has much, if any, impact

I can't believe this thread is still going ! Just goes to show that Billy Corgan is rather polarizing due to his Jupiter-Sized ego, preemptive attacks on his perceived enemies, and uncompromising artistry (I actually admire that last trait of his).

I wonder though, if his chrome-dome actually helps him function as a lightning rod for controversy. Maybe if he let his hair grow back in, or wore a toupee, or even a wig, he would be a softer, kinder, gentler man. He looks so sinister & menacing !

Can he grow it back? I thought it was gone for good.

Maybe being follically challenged gives him a bonus when it comes to angst.

Yeah but...it seems to me that he was copying Bob Mould (Husker Du, Sugar) who went on to write for World Championship Wrestling (WCW).
[That being said, I think Vice has been going too far as of late in celebrity-baiting -- it doesn't make me feel good to read.]

Haha the wrestling commercial was pretty great actually.

When Billy does this stuff, the best you can do is laugh. However, I wish the press wouldn't trumpet how nuts he is. He's clearly had issues the whole time, and unfortunately it seems like being rich and famous probably ensured that he would never really have occasion to tackle the reality of whatever it is that makes him lash out or go so totally into his own navel. He's either on top of the world or scum in the life that he's arrived at, and I imagine what he really needs is some stability of self image.

Man I remember being a kid and watching time and time over again the video for Bullet with Butterfly Wings that I had recorded on my VHS. Billy was my childhood hero. I wanted to BE him.

I still think he is a genius and he made one of the best albums of all time almost all by himself but I think it's ok for medias to criticize him. He does come across as a narcissistic jerk.

I think hypetrain might have. Sounds like some of the people who saw it live liked it... I can't imagine it would really have mass appeal, but I'm sure that the crappy google face time audio capture adds another layer of unlikeability for the rest of us.

I tend to view it as an avant-garde self-indulgence (really for the interest of the artist more than external listeners).

I took a music composition listening exam that used this song. I hadn't thought much of him up to that point. Opened my eyes a fair bit. But then he kept on being Billy.
