Virus B, no sound??

Hi all

I just hooked up my Virus and I'm not getting any sound.
It;s a Virus B desktop.
I'm getting MIDI in (the musical note indicates) but no sound out.
I tried every output, and different patches. I'm sure it's a settings thing.
I have no maual to refer to.
Any ideas?

I forgot to add, I know the Virus works.
I tested it at a friends house and it was working fine a few weeks ago.

Is it possible you hooked up the wrong output? Have you checked the midi channels match?

I tried lots of outputs including headphones.
I don't know how to match the midi channels?

Might seem obvious but have you tested the cable?

Yep, tried 2 midi cables and 2 jacks.
I know the jack cable is ok coz when I tap it I get static.

Maybe try sending it midi cc 7 ... Set to 127
If not then factory reset.
Long shot but its the Last thing I can think of

Are you using a dedicated controller keyboard or a keyboard with a built-in sound source. If it's the latter, maybe go to your global MIDI settings pages and check to make sure "LOCAL" is on (or is it off?). Also check what MIDI channel it's transmitting on.

Also, as danielb says, make sure your controller is transmitting on the right MIDI channel and the receiving channel on the Virus is the same. This should be in your global MIDI settings in the Virus.

Will the demo play sound? If so then I'm 100% certain it's a midi thing.

Hmm, good point. I'll try that soon as I get home.

Grr, this **** always happens to me.
I tried activating demo and I get this message from the virus.

*No Demo songs, but 1024 patches!*

WTF, a patronising synthesiser?

So it seems my synth has sacrificed the demo feature to have more patch space.
Noble, but doesn't help me out much.
So, how do I set my controller and the virus to the same channel?

I seem to remember some frustration I had with my old Virus Rack (basically a cut down B). The midi note indicator in the screen would flash even if it was receiving Midi on the wrong channel. The actual indication was slightly different, but I can't remember what the difference was (maybe an open note vs a closed note?).

Either find out which Midi channel your Virus is set to and set the keyboard to the same channel, or vice versa.

Alternatively, step through the Midi channels on your keyboard till you hear the Virus make a sound.

I wonder if you have it in a midi controller mode, or `local off' mode, where local sounds are disabled, and the device transmits midi only?

I've tried with the Triton on local off, and local on. Neither work.
Interesting development..
If I put the Triton to MIDI channel 1 then the indicator on the virus when I hit a key is a crotchet.
If I put the Triton to any channel other than 1, the virus indicates a minim.
This must mean that channel 1 is important.
So now I'm totally stuck.

I've resetted the Virus to factory settings, that also didn't work.

From what I remember, that means your Virus is set to channel 1.

Try putting it on ROM B, patch 127. It should be an init patch. That will at least discount something in the patch itself.

My bank B patch 127 is a snare.
I found init on Bank A patch 126. Still no sound.

I can't really think of anything else.

What are you connecting to, and how? Do you have any other hardware that does make a sound?

One more thing; does the B have a global volume knob? If so, make sure it's turned up.

The B has a master volume knob which is half way. I've tried tweaking it while I play.
I gave up on the Triton and got my m-audio Oxygen 61 to see if it helped.
Same thing. I get the musical note on the Virus but no sound.

I just found out about a patch test you can do by holding sync and edit.
Didn't work.

Have you tried plugging headphones into the headphone output?

Didn't think of that!
Just tried it, didn't work.
All my cables are balanced/stereo cables. Could that make a difference?

If you use the audition feature (oscillator edit + sync) on an init patch using headphones in the headphone output, and the volume is not at zero, and you still can't hear anything, then I think there's probably something wrong with it.

I really can't think of anything else.

Are you using the original power supply? If not, is it up to spec?

Or maybe it's time to replace the internal battery?

Power supply doesn't look original but it's the correct spec.
I just got back from a store where the guy actually had an identical Virus B and he played around with it for a few minutes before telling me it was faulty.
So now I have to take it to a repaire shop and get a quote, which will be sky high because parts are hard to get.
I can see me returning this to the seller for full refund.
It's weird, the original seller is genuinely confused as to why it's not working and said he will refund me in full no problem.

As for your response, could a dead internal battery cause these symtpoms?

If this was mine I would open it up and see if there is anything obvious.

Maybe an internal cable has come loose or something.

Dead battery may corrupt the patches but load in new ones and that should work.

It might be something simple like a broken solder joint but good luck finding that.

Can a dead battery corrupt ROM patches?

Opened it up, nothing obviously loose or missing.
I removed the cr2032 battery and put it back, then turned it on. No difference.
I don't know why but I removed the cr2032 and turned it on without putting it back, just to see what happened. No difference.
Strange that all the patches were still there, even with the internal battery missing.
Anyway, I get a small pop in the headphones when I turn it on or off but no sound other than that.
