At some point he cranks up the resonance, plays with the cutoff - and almost nothing. It sounds as if the resonance is closed, and you here just the cutoff opens and closes.
I noticed that as well and wondered if there was something happening that I didn't quite understand...

You understood perfectly.
It's pretty much the same filter response i had with my P08 and polyevolver.

Aren't the waveforms in the Polyevolver the same ones as the Prophet VS?

In the digital oscilators of the polyevolver, you get 94 of the waveforms that were on the prophet vs.

That was kind of the perspective I was coming from with aliasing.

One reason VA, soft synths and hardware sample based engine have gotten better is because they eliminated or reduced the aliasing. There is no aliasing in true analog. The PC3 sound much better over the K series due to improvement in this area. People say Diva sounds like real analog partly because of this likewise.

However, I see where the points about it possibly being a desirable effect on sound likewise for various reasons in certain applications and synthesis methods. I would have to hear it in use on the P12 to make that determination.

As Pym noted - it depends. In most cases aliasing is not wanted or intentional designed to be present. If playing real orchestra, instruments or emulating an analog synth, aliasing would not be desired.

Having an analog signal path post osc and other specific feature of the P12 may be the difference in it sounding appealing and desirable? What the results are and how this aliasing sounds on the Prophet 12 will have to be determined by hearing and playing the synth once its available.

This shouldn’t be confused with wanting a sterile or clean sound though. That is completely different thing. Having imperfections, noise, low bit samples, can be very desirable. I wouldn’t point any inherent aliasing as being the desirable qualities for it though. Of course this is my own perspective agree or disagree. If it is user definable, then that’s is clearly the best solution.

In that way, I could see maybe turning it on and off per program if possible.

Just an idea Pym:

Synth Voice Layers and where they mix

Basic structure with much removed for clarity (I assume this from specs so far, if wrong skip forward to the alternative question below):

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
3(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
4(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)

Examples of mixing after the (OSC DIG)

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) -

3(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
4(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) -

3(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
4(OSC DIG) -

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) -
3(OSC DIG) -

4(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) -
3(OSC DIG) -
4(OSC DIG) -

Examples of mixing after the (DIG FX CHAR) :

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -

3(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
4(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -

3(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
4(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -
3(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -

4(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -
3(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -
4(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -

Now combinations of the above mix points:

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) -

3(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
4(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -
3(OSC DIG) -

4(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -
3(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -
4(OSC DIG) -

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -
3(OSC DIG) -
4(OSC DIG) -

Alternative after looking at the other possible layout:

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -
3(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -
4(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) -

Or

1(OSC DIG) - (DIG FX CHAR) - (ENVS ANALOG) - (the rest of the synth)
2(OSC DIG) -
3(OSC DIG) -
4(OSC DIG) -

It would be interesting to know which layout it has if one of these

Well, according to Pym (who is an actual DSI employee), it has 4 completely digital oscillators (which was posted in this very thread - see page 1), so either your source misread the specs or they're copy-pasting them from the Evolver or something.

Once again the DSI sound is just not doing it for me at all. Shame really, I have huge respect for Dave Smith and his company and really wish them all the best.

Wow! This "italian important source" must be someone more powerful than Dave Smith himself who clearly stated in the NAMM video these are full digital VA oscillators:

My comment had nothing to do with the synth, which i think looks great.
My comment was about the people posting/trolling and whining about it
I love my VS rack, this synth looks great.....

I know ,i got that, I'm with you on people whining on and on..... If people aren't happy with this then do what Ken Macbeth has done and design and build your own synths.

Does it have external audio input?

Would be a massive shame to waste the filters, distortion and effects for other stuff...

The Prophet-12 sounded good in Dave's Studio but somehow it didn't do anything when people just tweaked it. This reminds me very much at the Prophet-08 were some sounds were just astonishing good and once you tweak yourself you step outside the sweet-spot very quick.

I hope though that I am wrong.

from the vids i've seen i think it's just a case of no one having a clue how a synthesiser works, turning everything up to 11 and then dialling in lashings of overdrive. same goes for the MS20. clueless random tweaks are going to produce crap sounds.

best demo so far. the first sound i dont find "warm and fat" as they wrote, as it sounds like classic "programmed" lushness i.e. pitch uncertainty (which is better reserved for vco polyanalogs that do it naturally). however other sounds are much more up my alley in context of a deep hybrid poly.

tho i can't say i feel the "instant classic" in this yet, as some claim it is. perhaps these sounds are just a tip of the iceberg. i am not crazy about the mandatory late gen. CEM filter/vca chip that DSI uses in all their products, but admit it sounds best in this incarnation. they did say they cleaned it up in upper range.. also, i think its character works better with digital osc than in typical analog setting.

would like to hear more of that HPF and some audio range fm-ing of the both filters with or without resonance... that will be quite revealing for the analog half of the machine.

from the YT link you just copy the last code with numbers/letters. in this case it was:

7z5ESSXjgnM

now you press the YouTube option in GS post thread window, and paste this code inbtwn, so it looks like this:

[yout..]7z5ESSXjgnM[/youtu..]

thats all.
