Paul Hardcastle's Synth Lead sound ?

Anyone know what Paul Hardcastle uses for his Lead Synth lines in some of his more current stuff? He has little stabs going on using the same sound.. but can't put my finger on it. Thx ; )

A Youtube or iTunes/Amazon link to that "more current stuff" would help.

Great! At the beginning of "Puerto Banus" but he uses it here and there in about half his tunes. Thanks! ; )

Single oscillator, sine wave (lowpassed square would work as substitute), portamento, monophonic mode enabled (in case you have a polyphic synth). Little reverb or delay and that's it, really.

This is the same sound as what's referred to as the Gangster whistle prevalent in various R&B/hiphop tracks of the 90s.

An MS2000 is a rather run off the mill virtual analog synthesizer. This is an unfiltered sinewave so it's not like there's some special sauce filter character deal going on or some oscillator type that's unattainable in software form, either.

What plugins do you have? The sound is trivial to mimic, it's all in the playing technique.

Yoozer hit the nail on the head. I've enjoyed Paul's stuff since the 80s but there's nothing special about his "flute" lead that he's been using for a long time. His performance and the effects chain are key.

Last night I was using an OB-style slightly buzzy pad sound from my K2600. By itself, it was ok, but kind of dull. Then I ran it through a verb/chorus/delay patch on the DP/4+ and it had all kinds of character. I hit a 4 octave unison note and BAM! It sounded like it had been lifted from the Blade Runner soundtrack.

Sadly, it didnt keep that character for any kind of lead line, but for that particular application, it was a fantastic sound.

Pay special attention to the verb and delays Paul uses on that lead as well as his pitch bend and grace note techniques. It's been a signature sound for him for a long time.

Hey. The list of VSTs I "Don't" have is much shorter. My Yamaha XF8 has some very similiar patches I've been using over the years, I agree that's a very common ordinary sound.. but the Hardcastle patch just has some sort of purity I can't describe, always liked it.
