Just 10 sounds out of a dog?!?

A decent, professional dog has at least

3 fart sounds,
3 snore sounds,
4 whines,
4 or 5 arfs,
of course at least a dozen barks,
half a dozen dramatic/threatening howls
three passionate/nostalgic howls
at least one sneeze and
one cough,
a barf or two,
two purrs (yes, you stupid cat owners: dogs CAN purr! And way better than cats)
...
etc etc

That much sounds out of a dog, and without even tweaking his nose or ears or a tail !! I think there has to be something wrong with my dog...

No. It was a producer's choice, which gives him his unique personality.

Think of the minimoog-D lacking OSC sinc, or having fixed "bottom note" priority.

I know, I know: it would be worth **** if I tried to sell him on e-bay as a defence dog...

But how can you blame a Chocolate Labrador for not growling?

Back ot a synth like odyssey is amazing flexible considering its just square & sawtooth. Its got that hellacious ring mod and fm lfo plus s& h. If it was poly it woold be the pad machine to be dying for. Plus the filter(s) all have good characters from the moogy one they got sued for and the second one. A bit o noise and playing the filter is sublimity.
Who said just a few sound ?
Odyssey is pretty basic but amazing for it

Sounds like a good one.

It's true some dogs have more snap, bite and growl than others, but that doesn't mean they should.

A big modular system is a very different kettle of fish compared to the Juno type of synth the OP was discussing. There's only so many places you can take a single oscillator synth with fixed architecture. So I've got some sympathy for what he's saying, there are definitely some synths that have a quite limited palette. But even the TB303 has a few distinct variations in it.

I certainly find the limitations of my Sub37 quite noticeable after programming something like my TG77, Radias or Prophet 12.

Anyway, all analogue synths basically just do synthbrass don't they?

In theory, an old school analog synth has an infinite "number" of sounds it can create. Granted, some of them will be indistinguishable from others... move the filter cutoff knob 0.0001 degree, and you'll have a different sound, though not much different than what you had before.

How much does the sound have to change before it's considered a different sound? If you start with a sawtooth, medium cutoff, no resonance, and some release on the envelope... then turn the release up so it takes longer to fade out, is that now a different sound? Now turn release down to zero so it cuts off abruptly. Is that now a different sound?

Digital synths have more parameters but less resolution on each of those parameters. Does that mean it has more sounds? Or less?

Here's an interesting way to see it... think of an analog synth as a block of clay. You can sculpt the clay to make whatever you want, within the limitations of the clay. You could sculpt a model of someone's face and make it quite detailed with enough time and skill, but it will be all the same color. Think of a digital synth as a box of Legos. You can assemble the Legos into whatever you want, and you'll have more colors, shapes and cool features like wheels, doors and windows, but it won't have the resolution of the analog clay model.

Everyone has different tastes. Is that 15 usable sounds from a Juno to you? I hear patches all the time I wouldn’t use. I’m sure you could max out sounds you find palatable on a given oldschool synth and there are thousands more for others you would never consider. Ear of the beholder n all

If you can only get 15 sounds from a Juno you should probably try just listening to music instead.
