Share your Free Music Making Apps!

Gday, i'm currently designing a Music Unit for a my Masters Degree in Teaching. The unit i've made up is based around Minimal Music, with an emphasis on teaching kids how to use different kinds of technology to compose and perform music.

As part of the unit, i'm searching for free music apps that kids can get a hold of easily to help their study of the unit. I'm trying to focus on computer based apps, but am open to phone based apps as well (iOS, Android etc). Basically i'm looking for good stuff that is free and that will be a good tool for students learning about and creating music.

So far, i've come up with the free version of Studio One as the main DAW, but would be recommending Acid and Garage Band as well. I don't really have any other ideas on the DAW front, or any web based apps that could be useful either. The only other thing I was thinking of using was the web based modular synth that was released a few months ago (can't remember what it was called).

As far as mobile apps goes, being an apple user i've only really been able to come up with a couple of iOS apps (Tonepad, synthPond etc).

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

i've compiled a huge list of free music making apps here:

Free VST Host Application Roundup! - Bedroom Producers Blog

my personal favorites are MuLab Free (amazing for its modularity) and Podium Free.

enjoy!

I think PD will be a difficult concept for high school students to grasp, especially if they have no prior skills with modular computer environments, thanks for the suggestion though!

Thanks to everyone else, great suggestions
