Can you hear the sound of PAIN?

Slutz - I need help...

I have been working on a track and everytime I think I have got the mix about right I bounce it and test play it on a few different systems.
Loud on the big monitors, normal mix volume in the adjacent studio's nearfields, on earbuds and DT770's - NO PROBLEMS.

Then I think: "great! I can go home and rest and forget about this one until tomorrow"
At which point I stick a copy of the file on my HTC phone and a USB stick.

Then on the way home I get excited and listen using earbuds or DT770's, straight from my phone and....

DISASTER

The sub is distorting horribly to the point of clicks/pops and renders the file unlistenable!

I checked the files on a laptop at home and they seem to be fine, so I assume it's just the output of my phone.

So my question is: Do you hear distortion/clicks/pops?
This file is missing some parts of the song but I narrowed the problem down to the sub bass, so try not to judge too harshly...

I want to be confident that this is just a freak occurence with this one phone and my ears aren't broken! If it makes any difference, the monitors I'm using are Dynaudio BM15a so the bass response is pretty good.
Attached Files

Pretty Thing 5 edits just sub.mp3 (2.09 MB, 156 views)

Thanks Brickman!

It's been so annoying...I was really happy with the mixdown but if most people's first listen is on an iPhone I didn't want to damage their hearing!

I am listening to the file AT LOW VOLUME with BAD BAD BAD BAD computer monitors (at my day-job office, not in the studio),

and by "bad" I mean "having a 400-to-4000 hertz range",

and I hear NICE, FULL BASS.

Which probably means that there's HUGE HUMONGOUS BASS, OVERSUBBED BASS, WOOFER-CRASHING BASS in the original file.

These monitors could thin out the sound of an atomic bomb, so, you probably overplayed the bass range

Not a scientific test, but... have a look at the bass again

Thanks for the reply ozy, I will indeed check the bass volume in the mix. But did you hear any kind of audible clicks or pops at all? They were mainly in the left side.

so it was fine until you turned it into an mp3 and put it on the USB stick?

No, it was fine until I played the files from my phone (via audio lead or headphones). I even transferred the same files off my phone onto a laptop and listened using the same headphones...

LAPTOP - No clicks
PHONE - Distorted pops and clicks

I just want to make sure that this won't happen on other people's systems as I can't hear the issue at all in the studio...

Yeah Reptil, it would seem like that, except I haven't had this issue with any other files...in 3 years of having this phone.
I take it you can't hear any weird clicks/pops then?

if nothing bad shows up, it's your phone.

No clicks and pops here but I listened only on an IPad.
On the build in speaker I can barely sense there is a bass.
With my Beyerdynamic earbuds the bass is huge, really huge.
No clicks and pops but loud. Did you check for intersample peaks ?
Could be your phone is not broken but can't handle the signal.

Sounds good to my ears, maybe a bit too much highs/sizzle for my taste but I really like the solid bass.

No clicks/pops whatsoever on Genelec 1031A or SONY MDR-7506 cans.

My HTC Desire takes 24 bit files and turns them into Merzbow's greatest hits.

Make sure your file is 16 bit.

Thanks a bunch for all your replies! I'm starting to have faith in myself again

I have noticed that with 24 bit wavs (possibly all wavs) my HTC Desire just turns them into noise, so it isn't that...plus the files are just mp3 so I didn't think that could be a factor.

Did u roll off under 30hz? There might be some really really low inaudible freqs that are upsetting small speakers

Just a thought: I had a similar issue with a specific laptop, when listening with my in-ear phones.

The problem was that I listenend on VERY low volume setting of the laptop! In-ear phones do not need much volume, and if the track was already "loud", I turned the laptop volume down and came below a certain threshold, and the audio card (or headphone "amp"?) distorted. But it had nothing to do with the audio file itself.

Or maybe heavily limited, that's the common issue (in low end, distortion clicks etc.), with hard limit, and listening on crappy speakers.

I know some HTC phones come with fancy SRS audio plugins that apply a smiley EQ and some kind of reverb so it sounds "true to the original way the artist intended the music to sound" (whatever).

Have you turned that off?

I can't find any settings like that on any phone settings menus, or in the settings of the music player app. It could be, as someone mentioned earlier, that it's something to do with the project being 24bit, or how the phone reads files bounced from cubase etc...
