This question is meaningless. There is no best. There is nothing that does everything.

What is your budget?

What is your preferred method? (analog, virtual analog, sample-based, other)

What do you already have?

Great reply. But, I look at it like this: People who don't want to put the work in to ask a proper question and expect folks on here to be able to read their minds aren't really deserving of a reply.

They're the type who will shoot down your answers too.

A car dealer who encounters someone with a question like this knows he really has no intent of buying. Real buyers come with some prior knowledge.

I've reconsidered my reply.
You should definitely get Crumar Stratus. Don't even think about anything else.
Just get Crumar Stratus. It's the best one.

Narrow down your question and you might get a real reply.

Confession: this wasn't a serious thread. Nor was it supposed to be a 'trolling' thread. Kind of hoped people would see it was a joke and it'd give them a chuckle.

Hi! I'm new!

Now, serious question: what is the best guitar?

Everyone so far has pointed out that your question is too vague, which is true.

So you're going to need to research properly. Consider these things as as start:

* There are synthesizers with different purposes:
- monophonic: Plays only a single note at a time, but often excels tone-wise
- polyphonic: Plays several notes at once
- drum synth /drum machine: Makes percussive sounds
- (more besides these...)

* There are snythesizers with different technology platforms:
- analogue: An electrical signal itself generates a tone by undergoing various electronic manipulations (and ultimately the causing vibrations of a speaker). These were popular before digital synths. Known to produce big, round, fat, organic sounds; difficult to emulate acoustic instrumental sounds using only this sort of synthesis.
- digital: A computer code stores a digital description of a sound electronically. This sound coding may be altered via digital processes (eg an algorithm). The result is a very flexible instrument which can store audio samples (unlike analogue) in a similar way to how a picture is coded and stored on your computer - a picture is stored via a record of a grid of pixel colours; similarly audio is stored via a kind of grid of amplitude (ie vertical) and frequency (ie horizontal). Digital synths are known for their flexibility and can emulate all sorts of other instruments very well (though not always "perfectly").

* There are different modes of synthesis which may reside in either the analogue or digital realm, or both. I suggest looking these up yourself:
- subtractive
- FM
- additive
- wavetable
- sample based (often called "Romplers")
And many others besides.

What's more, these days many of the above exist as software which you can use on an ordinary computer.

Which you deem to be "best" depends entirely on your own requirements: The list that I've provided here describes a broad array of possibilities and highly divergent sounds and potentials.

You're a very patient person, good for you.

Really wasn't trying to fool anyone though. Thought it was an obvious joke.

Anyway, I already know what the best synth is... the microkorg.

An obvious joke is not discernable from a real newbie thread.

Replace "synthesizer" with "monitor speaker" and you have threads started by people who are 100% serious.
