Hi,

I finally got my Casio CZ1. I'm trying to recreate some sounds i found on youtube:

I got some sounds that somewhat sounded like the video, but I can't get really close. Any advice how I can create those sounds?

I'd appreciate any advice concerning programming the CZ1 as well

greetings, kaustik

As the video said, it's the resonant waveforms (numbers 6,7 and 8 - possibly in combination with one of the other ones, all on the same oscillator). Then there's the ring-mod with the other oscillator. The DCW envelopes are very important for shaping the resonant waveforms, over the param range of 0-99 it's roughly equivalent to opening and closing a normal resonant filter. You have to find the sweet spot for these sounds, and when you add in the ring-mod it multiplies the number of sonic areas to explore. Add in 8 stage pitch envelopes and this area is huge.

At a basic level, to get the subtle movement you have to program long times (low values) for the envelope stages in the DCW envelopes and/or the DCO pitch envelopes so the wave shape is changing. The envelopes don't loop and the LFO only modulates the overall pitch (sounds like it's on medium on the first of those sounds on the vid), so to get slow up and down timbre modulation over a few seconds you need to use quite a few envelope stages.

I love my CZ101, nothing else sounds like a CZ!
