Steve Reich - tape loops??

I've been heavily listening to Reich's "Phases" album for the last year, and I'm interested in the production/arrangement.

He does an amazing job of bringing layers in and out, and keeping things from sounding too cluttered. Very good choice of instrumentation and timbre.

Anyone have info on what he might be doing in this album? How is was recorded? How he arranges things?

He had reels of tape, not much else - these compositions predate a lot of audio tech we take for granted these days. Common techniques included physically splicing the tape (using a razor), rejoining to create loops; these would be played slightly out of phase to create phasing effects.
