Best of 80's Analog

I've got money to spend on itunes and wanna hit the decade I know the least. I'm sure y'all got some great synth-based albums you can recommend, Depeche Mode and Simple Minds are a couple bands I've been meaning to check out but I'm open to anything so long as it's influenced by electronic sounds.

I can't remember all the album names off the top of my head but check out:

Eurythmics - first 2 albums (Sweet Dreams and Touch maybe)
Depeche mode - get the first singles compilation
Yazoo (Yaz if you are in US) -Upstairs at Eric's
Yello - You gotta say yes...

That was what I was listening to in those days, from that genre anyway.

yazoo 'upstairs at eric's' is one of THE definitive synth-pop records. mandatory imho
sigue sigue sputnik 'flaunt it' is a must for 80's excess and cheeky hi-fi audio trickery. giorgio moroder works the Fairlight!
the cars 'heartbeat city' soundtrack of my summer of '84
prince -'1999' & 'purple rain' are the best-known, but he did tons of other great stuff too
peter gabriel - ANYTHING. the man is a master on many levels

+1 for Eurythmics and Yello. maybe start with 'Stella'. also 'Solid Pleasure'

that should give you plenty to chew on for a while.

+1 on this - along with Gary Newman/Tubeway Army, Thomas Dolby, Ultravox, PWEI and Talk Talk.

Probably lesser known outside of Aus/NZ but Autumnal Park by Pseudo Echo is also a great synth album.

And the memories come flooding back...

HΓ€rte 10 (Welcome to Germany is the most electronic of their three albums, but more sampling than analog though)

I think you'll find it's The Pleasure Principle - although it could describe a fun teacher I suppose. Splitting hairs for a second it's also 1979. For '80s Numan Telekon, Dance and I, Assassin contain tons of synth goodies.

I really hate 80's pop/rock music. During that time, anyone who had the privilege of having been a music listener in the late 60's/early 70's would see with deep sorrow that things were slumping downhill quite precipitously. With (very rare) exceptions, of course: Bush, Gabriel, Rundgren, (+, to a lesser extent, Police, Nik Kershaw and XTC). Use of electronic instruments is prominent with all of the above. Exceptions apart, the mainstream was just horrible (Duran, Spandau, Ultravox, Simple Minds etc.), unless maybe dancing was your priority...

But these are the ruminations of an old fart so...do not worry!

Fortunately the eighties saw the rise of brilliant musical projects in fields other than pop/rock. Those where synths play a major role include, so I highly recommend them to you:
Pat Metheny Group - any 80's album
Oregon - Ecotopia
Steps Ahead - Magnetics

best regards
Massimo

Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle, Telekon, Dance / Split Enz - True Colors / Visage - Visage / Duran Duran - Rio / Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel 3 (Melt) / Thomas Dolby - The Golden Age Of Wireless / Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Organisation / The Human League - Travelogue / Nash The Slash - Children Of The Night / Alan Parsons Project - Eye In The Sky / Japan - Gentlemen Take Polaroids / Devo - Freedom Of Choice / Magazine - The Correct Use Of Soap / A-Ha- Hunting High And Low / ---------- The synthesizer and drum machine sounds on these albums are groundbreaking & phenomenal. The way they sonically merge with organic bass, drums & guitar (on certain songs) and voice is incredible. The songs are very unique, compositionally. I highly recommend these albums. The 1980's is the most underappreciated & misunderstood decade, and the most revolutionary.

Other than all the stuff mentioned already, there's one that gets forgotten often, Severed Heads, way ahead of their time. If they had been from England I think they would have been huge.

The 80's encompasses such a wide range of electronic music styles, much of it for the first time, synth pop, ebm, italo, electro, techno, house, etc. You've got a lot to listen to!

You might want to check out the darker, industrial ebm stuff too, pretty much everything by DAF and Front 242, both way ahead of there time also.

If you like your music a little less pop but definitely 80's check out Holgar -

Movies (1979)
On the Way to the Peak of Normal (1981)

Movies - Beautiful example of sampling mentality before samplers! A 'must listen'!!

Probably nothing that hasnt been listed already but I'll list my absolute essentials -

Thomas Dolby - Golden Age of Wireless, The Flat Earth
John Foxx - Metamatic
Japan - Tin Drum
Yellow Magic Orchestra -BGM, Technodelic
Rush - Signals, Grace Under Pressure
Tangerine Dream - Tangram, Exit, Hyperborea
Vangelis - Blade Runner, Antarctica

Also there are so many good italo disco and high nrg songs from the early 80's that I cant even begin to list them. some of them are cheesey as hell but they are all just dripping with classic synths. look up the italo disco thread in this forum for some ideas...
