Exactly it's compressed but not so much to the point that it looses dynamics. For me it sounds really wide open and easy on the ear but also punchy.
Yeah I'm really glad people are getting into this sound.
It's like ambiental for me but with some cojones
Also The Field really helped open this path to the more nu-raveish crowd.
I like these artists a lot because they tend to love all sounds both new and old but also remain on a well paved path from the masters before them.
For me it retains all the good things from modern production (punchyness, movement, sound design, vsts, ableton-like livesets, experimental) but also has some of that oldschool 3d sound with depth saturation dynamics and warmth. They use a lot of analog stuff at the mastering stage with really high end compressors and great processing.
I was doing similar stuff in my dj sets with regular techno/minimal/electro but taking it into this direction with lot's of substractive filtering and layering other types of percussion and effects ...just putting out nice hypnotic sounds out there...

as much as I love all the LinnDrum ,909 808 etc sounds stuff that sounds "stock" or "straight from the machine" without artistic, creative or context dependent input really doesn't takes me that far away... I get a "

not that sound again" feeling.
...but people around here were too much into fun, melodic, popish new disco..... while fun and also myself like it a lot for a night out sometimes or just home listening, it really got me out of this type of djing (actually made me take a break) because I really couldn't just mix stuff I didn't feel to mix just to fit the norm as there are ppl already doing that. So I usuall end up with 40% of the crowd staying and really having an amazing time while the other % go home feeling underwhelmed... not really any middle ground.
Although a event I had last month which had a very good warming djs and some lesser dark music before me, but in the same vein, actually prepared the people and it was a blast so I have high hopes for new events.
