is 30ms attack considered fast? I've been using about a 15ms attack and 20ms release, as my waves compressors dont have an auto release..

I would bet its considered slow

Its the slowest attack setting on the compressor. When using the auto-release with this attack setting, the needle never returns to zero, but keeps a steady gain reduction, so I would be the release is way slower than 20ms...

I use 2:1 ratio and just a kiss of reduction. Dont like it compressing more than 0.5-1.5 db on my allready pretty compressed trance productions..

What I find interesting tough, is that alot of hardware compressors (except SSL Style) only have very quick attack-possibilities. Dont you guys find that very restricting, especially for "envelope-shaping"?

hmm i've got mine all back asswards then.. because I too compress each track already at about 6db of gain reduction prior to mix buss compression.. i'm gonna shoot for 2db of gain reduction on the mix buss instead of 5db that i am using now and bring my attack to 25-30ms instead of 12..

It all depends on the material tough. These are just the settings I find work best for me and my music...

1. UAD Fatso - Input "clipping" only, for character and to protect the comp.

2. UAD 4K - 2:1, 30ms attack, 100ms release, just a little wiggle wiggle, bouncey bouncey.

3. UAD PL - Mode B, 25ms release gives less distortion.

Colortone with an ssl4048 IR.
Waves SSL comp, 1-2 db gain reduction.
Mix THROUGH them.
Maybe a tape emulation plugin at the end, depends on what sound I'm going for.

And I'm totally satisfied.

Also, please, DON'T confuse the things u can have in your mix bus while in the mixing stage with MASTERING.

Usually this is my setup:

If the material is slow mix, then precision Comp will be bypassed!

UAD Pultec (add 5dB hi-shelf around 12K) OR same setting with UAD Ex1
UAD LA2A (2dB MAX gain reduction. mostly near 1dB reduction)
UAD Precision Buss Comp. (2~3 dB reduction with very FAST attack and release)

Sonalksis MAXLimit (around 3 dB reduction with no softclip and smoth. release between 2 and 6)

and when dither needed, I use MAXLimit dithering.

I put stuff on the 2 bus just to give the mix a little finale feel while I am writing/mixing.. just personally how I work. I will turn it mostly off before a final mixdown to send for mastering.

A little bus compression with either PSP oldTimer or URS CSP or 1970 comp.
URS N mix
Nomad Brickwall

Typically I leave the EQ blank but it is really handy I find during mixing to be able to adjust some settings and see how it effects my mix. Sometimes I will do some minor EQ before sending to mastering but it depends. Generally if a little EQ helps I will try and see what I can do in the mix. But .. if it sounds good it sounds good.
